Odd place for a derrick in the middle of La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles, picture 1940.
The derrick was built in 1907 in a cotton field, the city grew around it.


What you DO see is a lot of pumpjacks - this one is from OK & pretty fancy. Most of the ones I see are in the middle of cattle or agriculture field and old. A lot of unfamiliar folks think these pumps are "derricks".

I stand corrected (and am a fellow Texan, so I should be ashamed.) I was confusing pumpjacks (which are ubiquitous in my stretch of Oklahoma) with derricks. Thank you for teaching me the difference.
