When this suit was brought on Jan. 23, everyone agreed it was a long shot.
However, it recently came to light that the Saudi Government picked up a US Citizen's tab at Trump's Washington DC Hotel. This makes the lawsuit much more viable.
Now the lawyers have their first test case, Politico reports. When a U.S. veteran stayed at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., from Jan. 23-26, a communications group lobbying for the Saudi government paid the bill.
The lobbying firm, Qorvis MSLGroup, has been flying vets and other activists to Washington to urge Congress to overturn a law it passed last year, over former President Barack Obama's veto, allowing the families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia. The Emoluments Clause prohibits U.S. officials from accepting gifts and payments from foreign governments, and it doesn't matter that Saudi Arabia didn't pay for the hotel room directly, since they will ultimately pick up the tab...
I'm not sure the point here. So they win and Trump has to return the cost of a hotel room. O.K.
The point?
Candidates and politicians often times get caught with money they would have rather not have accepted if they would have known the full background. There is no way to prove Trump knowingly did anything here.
That's not how this works. Emoluments aren't profits- they are payments.
EXACTLY....the money is illegal because it goes to his hotel. AND he has not provided proof that he has distanced himself from this hotel. AND he is in violation of this hotel's lease with GSA.
But the Republican Congress will protect him.....until he gives them a few trinkets of laws (ACA repeal and tax reform are top 2)....he's wearing thin with many in Congress. When no longer needed, impeachment begins. Within first term for sure. Maybe within first year.
