China is already a currency manipulator. Nobody denies that. It is not so much the fact that we need them to buy our debt, as it is currency manipulation by them to support their mfg. base so that their citizens don't revolt. They have devalued something like 6 or more times in the last 8 months. We need a soft dollar so our exports will sell overseas -- but yet it is strengthening... why is that if based on your theory we need their money so badly?
Seriously. VERY serious. End of Euro serious. End of reserve currency status serious. WW III serious.
The USA printed trillions, we devalued non stop , as did the EU and China. It is not war, but if we shift to one, we are the losers. China can take a lot more pain than we can. And yes we need people to buy if we are to embark on a massive building program as promised by Trump...
Trump is very weak, he started a fight with China and quickly learned he bit off more than he could chew. Trump lost in record time, by picking a fight through ignorance , he never planned it, he was just too damn ignorant to know what he was doing. He is completely out of his depth.
China gave up NOTHING, Trump gave up his credibility, in Dec trump claimed he would get concessions , and now we see him for what he is , wind bag know nothing.
On the bright side, we really don't want to get into a war with China over dumb stuff that doesn't impact the US one way or another . So it's best he respects the One China policy if this keeps peace with China.

I completely agree. It was fool hardy for Trump to act without seasoned advisors .
If you think Trump isn't living up to his promises, and is doing nothing - you need to see a specialist.
Too bad his promises have always been insane and dangerous. I'd rather him not live up to those promises for the sake of humanity. But this One China policy is a completely flip flop from his promise on the campaign where he opposed it.

Debt creation is not the same as formal devaluation.

We have no idea what has transpired between the Trump Administration and China. China has been talking a big game -- but in the end - we can make things miserable for them -- and they know it. Trump is also mindful of the US business lobby and special interests, not to mention has to deal with whiny liberals, dems and politicians that want to start a war. Clinton wanted to get us into war - Trump doesn't.
Political war -> currency war -> trade war -> real war.
Obviously he does not know what he is doing. Says whatever comes to his mind without considering the implications and not knowing the history.
At least he seems to be listening to his advisers now and maybe starting to learn. He's not having a love fest with the Russians anymore either. Wonder if he'll keep his trade deal promise with the UK or will he change his mind on that too.
Ugh.... too bad. I was hoping he would have some leverage with China. Definitely disappointing... but not surprising considering his MO of sky high promises.
it is very concerning to see our president continue to make such basic mistakes, I don't think there are many people involved in politics who would make these unforced errors.
Frankly the unforced errors suggest he is not up to the challenge of dealing with seasoned leaders who have been playing this game for decades . They may guide Trump to saying and doing some really unhelpful things that can damage our relations with other nations.
Just today you could see the Japanese PM, implying that the US and Japan could contain China, and I doubt Trump would pick up on it unless his staff spell it out.
He also changed his mind about moving the embassy in Israel. The guy talks real big and is indecisive as hell.
That's the worst quality we could possibly have in a leader.
