Unfortunately, the Trump people have no understanding of energy or energy policy.
Really? I now many 100's of people in the Energy industry and they predominately vote Republican

Coal is much cheaper than these other fuels.
Well yes, if you let mining operations destroy the environment and poison people, then let power plants fill the air with toxic crap, sure, coal is cheap.
But at the end of the day none of it matters. Even if coal were cheaper the jobs still aren't coming back to places like WV because it's cheaper and easier to get coal from other places.
Rather Trump can bring these jobs back does remain to be seen. But at least these workers NOW have a president that demonize their careers and vow to destroy their companies. At the least, it's a start in the right direction.
Lots of Trumps plans are highly optimistic. But at least they ARE optimistic, not the defeatist, put-Americans-last" efforts of our last president.
Trump's statements are optimistic (or delusional), but his PLANS... what plans? He has yet to propose a single, serious plan that will accomplish anything. Well, ok - I'm not counted the bigot plans on kicking out various unpopular minorities. Those goals are somewhat achievable, though deplorable.
As for the bashing of our last president, that is a totally groundless statement. Honestly, it seems that those on the far-right will condemn any leader as "not putting America first" unless that leader is actively out there blowing up other nations, stealing their resources, and generally running roughshod all over the planet. There isn't a single thing Obama did that is "putting America last," and it is laughable to blast him for being realistic instead of a manipulative con-man like Trump who is preying on people's dashed hopes with false optimism.
Fck coal. America moves forward, screw the ones left behind.
In the end, better technology wins. Smart phone kill the camera, film, cd, DVD, newspaper, computer, landline industry.
The gas industry hammered the coal industry and battery grid storage will finish off coal.

It's really bizarre, and it's why the economy in places like southern WV and eastern KY is completely broken.
The person who says yeah, those jobs are gone, let's retrain you and help you build up other industries is branded a defeatist and "put-Americans-last."
But the guy who comes in and offers up a completely empty vow to reopen a dead industry is seen as an optimist who's leading us in the right direction.
Optimistically denying reality is not really a plan. It's been tried for decades in places like WV and the results have been nothing short of catastrophic.
There are more jobs in renewable energy than in burning coal. We shut down a lot a farmers who used to raise tobacco for a living too. That's the way the work works. The coal era is ending. Get over it. In 2015 there were 2 new coal-fired plants built and 111 retired.
Energy experts give Trump the hard truth: You can’t bring coal back
Coal wasn’t killed by a political “war” — cheap renewables and fracked gas were the culprits.
Truth to tell coal in USA began to decline as ships and locomotives moved from steam to diesel or electric. Oil, natural gas and even electricity began eating into the domestic side (home heating, cooking, etc..) leaving pretty much only electricity generation.
Yes, there were and still are those who use coal for heating and cooking purposes, especially when prices for oil, propane or natural gas where high, but again the glut has brought things down. Even the once reliable "off the grid" demographic can tap into solar or other renewables for some or all of their energy needs.
Yes, there is still plenty of coal in the Appalachia area, but don't think even His Orangeness can bring back production and jobs. Wyoming coal is (IIRC) not only easier to get at but of a better quality than what is easily had in the northeast. Even that couldn't save the Wyoming coal industry as it was hit hard by the shale gas boom.
