Do you REALLY think those people are so determined and dead set on doing absolutely nothing to contribute to society they will choose death by starvation?
Seriously?

Many people work that amount in 2 days, if one can't manage it in a month to maintain their free handouts, it doesn't sound like they're all that concerned about getting their welfare.

So you're saying these people who couldn't be bothered to work 24 hours a month are now going to suddenly develop a work ethic?
Unlike right wingers who feel comfortable tempt for these people, I feel sorry for them. Nothing scares me more than not being able to carry my own weight. Think of all the dignity and self worth a person must lose to become dependent on the system.
That would be wonderful if it were true. Many see it as a career with no dignity lost when they get their handouts every month.

I know. I have worked for various charity organizations. While I saw some people who couldn't wait to get out of the system, most got way too comfortable residing in the system.
There was a girl I tried to help, and I mean I really really tried to help, who couldn't wait to get pregnant so she could get food stamps and everything else that came with it. When she did finally get pregnant, she went and applied to all the benefits. The part that told me I had failed her was when I found out she called everyone she knows and proudly told them she now got food stamps, medicaid, etc. To her, it was always the only path in life, to get pregnant and stay in the system.
I'm still sad to this day that I couldn't change her mind.

And just in case a young girl is reading this, please trust me when I say getting pregnant is not a good strategy to keeping him around. For most guys in such subculture and economic situation, getting pregnant with him is almost a sure way to drive him away. I have seen it so many times.
I know you guys think bad gangsta types are attractive. Trust me, they don't make good partner or father. I don't care how politically incorrect this sounds. I've seen too many of these cases first hand to care about people's fragile feelings on this.

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
That is exactly what welfare does, it gives a man/woman a fish for a day. But only for that day. It does not prepare them to live on their own for a lifetime. On welfare, they will never be able to work themselves up, own their home, save for retirement or earn social security. They will be poor the rest of their lives.

So you think the person that's too lazy to figure out how to work 24 hours a month, is suddenly going to find their work ethic when you tell them to work or starve?
You don't think that there are other options to earn money/feed themselves that are more in line with their desire to not work?
So Maine's politicians are expecting these people to just sit in their homes and die? Interesting strategy.
No they expected them to comply with the work requirement rather than just sit at home and do nothing. The majority of us work for a living and it doesn't kill us.
A close study of Somali refugees by the government of Maine (home to the nation's second-largest Somali community) found that fewer than half of the working-age population had worked at any time in the five years from 2001 through 2006.
That's "fewer than half" not half.
