I just finished the book titled "Culture Warrior" by Bill O'Reilly. There were some very interesting views and facts presented. Any opinions regarding this book? Just curious.

At times Bill turns me off, but at other times he says somethings that are right on target. I flipped through the book at the store, but did not buy it (many of these types of books are out ther--read one you've read them all kind of thing) I felt it was going to be a book all about how great Bill is, so I put it down.

It was basically about defending the traditional Christian views that our country was founded upon...and the liberal progressives who want to make America into something totally different. Big government that takes care of everyone...if that would work, not such a bad thing, however, history has proven that it is utopian thinking and would be our downfall, in my opinion. Anyway, it was interesting, and I got a 'warm fuzzy' reading it because I realize how much I truly love our country and want it to succeed.
Although I disagree with O'Reilly and find him find him to be arrogant and a little too right-leaning for my somewhat left-leaning tastes, he seems like a rational guy and he doesn't come off as scary as people like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter. He seems to see things from both sides of the issue a little bit more than your average talk radio blowhard. I'd never buy his book though.
And as for the "big government takes care of everbody" thing, that actually works quite well in a number of European countries (and Canada); I wouldn't advocate transforming the U.S. into Sweden but I think (personally) that what's best would be a balance between pure, free-market capitalism and euro-socialism, which most American liberals seem to support.

It doesn't work well in other countries, that's why we are constantly shelling out money all over the world. Our healthcare is superior too, that's why they are always flying in these extreme cases for surgery.

When's the last time we shelled out any money to Sweden or Canada or England? (we could have recently, I honestly don't know, but...) And... I don't think that these countries necessarily have inferior medical care to what we have here. We might have more advanced care for those who can afford it (I'm not sure, though...I'd have to look in to it), but if you can't, you can go bankrupt when you break your leg.

Just a little tidbit and I don't know what the scenario is anymore, but when I was about 22, I was in an abusive relationship and broke my arm by trying to defend myself...everything turned out okay in the end, but I had no insurance and the bill was a little hefty. It was extremely easy to work out payments with them in accordance to what I was able to afford and it worked out well. The last I heard, you cannot be refused medical treatment for the inability to pay...does anyone know of someone who has been refused? Anyway, the United States is still recognized as a superpower and I believe it's partially because of our capitalistic system that allows people to build and achieve their dream if he/she wants it bad enough.

This is a very easy suggestion to make, especially if one is fortunate enough to not have his or her efforts to make it in business taxed out the wazoo. I will agree that there is money available to take care of our own people, but it is so mishandled by our present imperial federal government, that any program that will give everyone what they need will only come to fruition by taking everything that we have. Euro-socialism is what has made Europe a continent of slaves.

Well... I'm not sure that Europeans would see it that way. (They might think we were "slaves" to excessive FCC regulations, harsh drug laws, and megacorporations) but I have to admit... I think my attitude towards conservatives has become pretty jaded from living all my life in Alabama, where people will rigorously defend a regressive tax system, think that everyone who lives in the inner-city is on welfare, and believe that everyone who uses public transportation is too lazy to buy a car.
I used to be a fan of O'Reilly, but I lost a ton of respect for him over the Iraq war. He stated that he wouldn't support the war and would question the legitimacy of the war if WMDs weren't found. Everything I've seen and heard from Bill has been of staunch defense of the war and making excuses for not finding those elusive WMDs. Once America was clued in to the fact that it was a fantasy, he changed his tune and continued to say it was right. I'm not trying to open those wounds again, but that's my take on O'Reilly--he tries to point out duplicity in the left and others, when in fact he's as guilty as everybody else.
