BBC - French historian Henry Rousso nearly deported from US

U.S. immigration authorities detain preeminent French historian for ten hours

One of France’s most widely respected Holocaust historians was detained for over 10 hours while trying to gain entry into the United States.

Rousso was scheduled to deliver a lecture titled “Writing on the Dark Side of the Recent Past” at Texas A&M University.

Rousso was stopped at immigration because of what an official called a “random check,” and was forced to wait over ten hours in a chair without access to his phone.

Rousso is an Egyptian-born French citizen. France is one of the beneficiaries of the U.S. visa waiver program, which only asks French citizens to fill out an online ESTA application before traveling to the US. Egypt is not one of the seven Muslim-majority countries that President Trump is in the process of attempting to ban.

It was only after law professors from the university intervened on his behalf that he was eventually allowed entry into the United States.

Rouso is Jewish - not Muslim - moved to France in 1956 at age 2.

What is your point? Are you saying that Obama screwed up ICE? We already know this.

The party in question said it was due to the inexperience of the officer handling the check. Blame Obama for gutting ICE. Trump is doing everything he can to fix Obama's "mess".

This appears to be an "opinion" piece. It seems the man was disturbed because he was the only white person among the others. Did he think "white" people should get special treatment? Wasn't this just described as an "mistake"? We are all subject to "mistakes". No story here.

Nothing like the competence of government workers. Hard to believe some believe they should take over health care.

Raising the BS flag on this one.

French citizens do not need a visa to enter the US.

Did you consider before posting this if you have all the facts of what happened? I have seen people not be allowed on the plane in Amsterdam, going to JFK because something was wrong with either their ESTA or passport.

Nobody told the people why and it was a huge commotion as it happened at the gate.

They were all white and Dutch as I could understand what was said and that they were very mad not to be allowed to board the plane. That was approx. 3 years ago and none of them seem to be of Muslim decent.

Keep in mind that passport needs to be valid for at least 6 more months.

On top of that I know of a black soccer player who played many International soccer games for the Netherlands who was send back upon arrival in the US due to a prior conviction and being held for hours while the rest of the team was allowed into the US!

People need to stop creating issues while not knowing all the facts what triggered the hold

We only had the one incident ourselves with one family member at first not able to find the white form she got to enter with her ESTA while the rest of us didn't need any ESTA's.

People get stopped for many reasons. Without knowing all the facts we don't know and can't judge.

But that probably told to people who only care about creating issues and seeing things different to keep whining over losing the election.

Obama gutted ICE? ICE had 12,000 employees in 2008 and has 19,000 today. The point is these are not isolated incidents, but the result of Trump's new extreme vetting. ICE is using this ONE employee as an excuse. Someone doesn't get held for 10 hours based on just one agent's actions

On top of that does the person in question know the difference between detained and arrested as he mentioned both in one sentence.

Publicized incidents like this will only add to the Trump Slump.

“It is now necessary to face up to the total arbitrariness and incompetence on the other side of the Atlantic,” he wrote. “I don’t know which is worse. What I do know, loving this country as I always have, is that the United States is no longer quite the United States.”

"Two more French academics are set to visit Texas A&M for a conference this week, he said. Golsan added that there was concern in the academic community that Rousso’s predicament was a sign that the anti-immigrant “spirit of Trump” has emboldened enforcement officials to behave overzealously.

Rousso is scheduled to fly back to France on Sunday – accompanied to the airport by a French consulate official to ensure his check-in process
