You're right, though. I'm not Latin[O]. I am, however, Portuguese. Latin. Iberian. The ones who actually colonized the new world. They didn't do a very good job of it, unfortunately.

I am not Latino, but I know that a Brazilian is not the same as a Puerto Rican. And that a Dominican is not the same as a Peruvian. I also know that an Afro-Mexican and an Argentinian-Italian are NOT.THE.SAME.RACE.

No matter how much you think you are, you are not. You aren't an ethnicity, either. "European" isn't an ethnicity. "French" is. "Swedish." "Chinese." Your ETHNICITY is the culture you grew up in --- Mexican culture has many SIMILARITIES with, say, Chilean, but it is NOT.THE.SAME.

As a "Latino," surely you know this? How could you not?

It's like if every country once colonized and ruled by Britain made up an ethnicity due to shared language, law and many customs and started to call themselves, "Brittanican" -- whether they were from Canada, the US, England, India, South Africa or Australia.

Yeah man, "Brittanican Pride!" Look at us we have sooo many common cultural cues and references, let's be an ethnicity now!
Considering I'm almost 1/5 indigenous blood, I can call myself Latino if I want. That's pretty significant amount. And we don't follow the US model of race. If you were born in LatAm, you're one of us. You don't need to be indigenous to be Latino. So no, please don't lecture how my own culture works

Wow. Way to completely miss the point. What does your indigenous blood have to do with anything? Congrats? Good for you?

I'm sorry if you're operating under a manufactured delusion of cultural - and ethnic - unity in Latin America. I'm also sorry you're having difficulty navigating the terms "race," "culture," "ethnicity" and "nationality." Maybe you NEED a lecture, but someone "living it" should definitely know this already. Stop posturing brown pride.

BTW, TONS of "Latinos" in America were NOT BORN IN LATIN AMERICA --- does that make them "not Latino"? Maybe only the ones that don't speak Spanish?

Want to know how deep your "Latino" pride runs? Call a Cuban a Mexican and see how far that gets you. Tell an Argentinian his culture is the same as a Dominican. Yeah yeah, but you know "how you're culture works, huh?" Of COURSE you're LATIN AMERICAN if you're born in Latin America. But that's about as useful as saying someone is European or Asian. Ok. And? So? WHERE in Europe? WHERE in Asia? These cultures have a lot of similarities but there is no "Latino" race. End of story. You have the ability to speak about PUERTO RICAN culture. Not Colombians. If I want to know about how Colombians view their experience in the US and Latin America, for example, I'll go ask my Colombian step-grandmother. Not you.

Face it: Only in the United States is this even a debate. Because oppression points are available for anyone who is "different," and being "different" is sometimes the only thing interesting about people who haven't cultivated an identity based on things that they can actually control about themselves.

And in the US, we go by YOUR rules. Don't try to understand it, you won't and never will. Stop getting all worked up you are not Latino, either by place of birth or descent, it's not your problem

It is my problem because I have to listen to people like you complain that there "aren't enough Latinos" on television in the United States. Despite the fact that being "Latino" is an amorphous, ultimately meaningless term in this country (perpetuated by LATINO interest groups, NOT Anglos, I assure you) ... and is rapidly becoming more useless through integration and intermarriage.

Oh, and despite the fact that the (very robust, I might add) Latin America media is whiter than the United States' media!

Quit bitching about the lack of people on TV with Spanish last names. Because in the end, that's all your little whine for "more Latinos" means.

But hey, you know what? Whatever you say. If being part of a "greater whole" makes you feel more powerful or connected to an identity because you feel oppressed and marginalized, then who am I to deny you your coping mechanism?

But deep down, you must know it's true. Your "Latin unity" is about as deep as "European" unity - it makes sense only when juxtaposed against anything else geographically.

PS: "MY" rules? You're Puerto Rican. Your people have been "American" for longer than my people, lol. And you can't even bring yourself to admit it. More people of "Puerto Rican" heritage have been born and have lived their entire lives in the actual United States than the 2million people who actually do live in Puerto Rico.... and you're still trying to pretend that you're exotic!

Oppression olympics brownie points for you!!! LOLOLOL

It's the stupidest stuff ever I refuse to watch one second of it and lower my IQ. What's laughable is how pretentious these celebrities are..they think they actually matter. They could all drop dead the world wouldn't blink. Just like how Bill Burr made fun of Cher about how she said she was going to move from Malibu to Canada.

Remember when Crash won the best picture award? The morons tried to say it was due to some sort of anti-gay conspiracy among academy members and that's why Brokeback Mountain didn't win. Never mind the fact that Crash was easily the better movie even Roger Ebert said so.

I was reading articles about the planets Nasa found while this was on pfffttt

I liked both Crash & Brokeback, both very good films. I was just fine with Crash winning that year.
