I am still bitter about my state voting for a $50 billion light rail system. I use public transportation and can tell you that the metro buses are perfectly fine except that there aren't enough of them. For way less than $1 billion they could simply buy more buses and hire more bus drivers.

Don't tell me I'm "not thinking long-term." The quintessential definition of short-term thinking is to create a fixed route from points A to B that will take decades for taxpayers to pay off and decades to build. By the way, when it finally is built and paid off, you liberals think that it'll be a free public utility. Yea, right. You'll be paying $10 each way, whereas if you traveled in one of the nice transit buses you would have your own comfortable forward-facing seat and wifi for $2.75.

The buses where I live have some " interesting" characters and waiting for a bus at a bus stop when it is 109 degrees outside is just not okay. It would have made sense to do light rail here since much of the employment is centered in one area. But all the NIMBYs voted against it. I wish we had something like the BART they have in the Bay Area.

Sounds like a local issue you need to take up on your state or city forum.

Billions on 150 year old technology. Self driving cars and buses are going to make trains obsolete (again)

follow the money. those pushing for it either make money from building it, take credit for building it - and care less about other taxpayers to get their shiny ride. economic feasibility is not something they understand.

Self driving cars are un-American.

Americans invented and/or optimized train travel. I would rather have a combination of real cars and trains than getting shuttled around by a robot in a Prius, anyday.

I believe this is what passed in Seattle. I think it's worth it myself even after calculating the additional property tax. I don't consider myself liberal, I just love a well functioning public subway and light rail system and willing to pay for it.

The more they spend, the less people will ride it.

You have to have half-empty trains for many to feel comfortable on it, if they try to narrow their losses the experience is miserable with many sick people, the trains reek and also many people buy day passes and sleep on the trains.

I know when ever I am on light-rails on most cities, it is a terrible experience.

In Los Angeles, there are people getting on and off the trains having psychotic meltdowns, selling merchandise, it is sticky and smelly.

Every time I have rode a train in Los Angeles, I feel like I am lucky if I don't have a sore throat 48 hours later from all the coughing and sneezing.

I would venture to guess the experience is equally as bad in New York City or Chicago.

Every other person seems to be coughing or sick also.

Denver and Salt Lake City which are smaller cities I have had much better experiences, because they run so frequently they are rarely crowded but that also widens the financial losses and farebox recovery rates.

I'm not referring to the subway project. Separate discussion.
