So it's not about need, it's about GDP? Who gives a flying f*%k about percentage of GDP? We're broke. We can't afford it and in no way shape or form do we need more military might. Pop some more steroids in order to beat up an 8 year old. Now we're talking.
It's about policy and defending our borders. Where in the constitution does it say to expand our empire and protect other nations borders better than we protect ours?

The US already spends as much on defence as the next 11 countries in the world combined, and the new increase alone will be nearly as much as the entire Russian Defence Budget.

Analysis: How does the US military need strengthening? - BBC News

Whilst the increase would help in a conventional war, wasn't one of Trumps criticism that not enough was being spent on Cyber and Terrorism including Terrorist CBRN capabilities as well as other non conventional threats and that NATO was therefore obsolete, indeed most recent terrorist attacks have been low tech lone wolf attacks, which need better intelligence and surveillance to prevent rather than conventional military forces.

Trump is also committed to massively upgrading US Nuclear Forces, which will also be costly, and whilst nuclear forces are a detterent, a nuclear war with the current US and Russian weapons is already enough to destroy the entire planet several times over.

Trump wants to expand America's nuclear arsenal

New Missile Defence Spending is another Trump commitment in relation to countries such as Iran and North Korea, and this will involve more US spending on radar, missile bases and other systems overseas and not less.

So let's forget about education and infrastructure so we can buy more guns we don't need. The military is the most bloated part of the federal government and Trump wants to keep throwing money at it. Smart move.

How does everyone feel about this? While I agree we need a strong military to protect our nation cutting our own programs that help fellow Americans doesn't sound right. And we need an agency to protect the Environment.

It will be money well spent. You think? Pentagon magicians made $125 billion disappear.

In other words, if the US government actually concerned itself with the enumerated responsibilities within the US Constitution, and let the states take care of their citizens as the people in those states dictated?

The federal government does not run any schools, and the state and local school districts don't need the feds ordering them around, and the states can take care of their own damn roads and bridges.

All the feds do is take tax money away from the states, and then the federal department of transportation gives them a little of it back. How about letting the states keep the all of that money in the first place?

As if we don't spend enough money on war already. Did Trump not get enough playtime with his GI Joes as a child?

The Chinese and the Russians have become far more brazen and provocative over the last few years and there is a reason for that. Either we have enough force to make them second guess their actions or we watch them run roughshod wherever they want.

And there is more than enough fat in nonmilitary programs and agencies to pay for this buildup.

We spend more than the next dozen countries COMBINED, several of whom are allies.

We don't need to spend more - we need to reallocate the spending.

You need to look at percentage of our GDP. Our GDP is a COMBINED of several countries of whom we are allies.
