The City of New Orleans should have the right to add or remove public monuments on public land. If the current residents of New Orleans, or any other city, are offended by monuments glorifying the slave owner South, it is proper for city councils to vote to remove those monuments or transfer them to museums.
This is really disappointing. This is part of American history and for the 11 southern states lots of peoples' family died for the CSA.
Looks like NOLA is trying to secede from their history, what a shame.
I hope no other losers try to take down anymore, if they tried to here in Richmond there'd be problems...
Lee was a better man than Grant, should we take Grant statues too?
It is a shameful part of Southern history. It is a time when several states were will to go to the death to keep a way of life/economy in which slavery was a large part of it. Put the statues in museums. However, they don't deserve honor.
There are those who look at all things Confederate as "southern heritage". If things like the Confederate flag and Confederate statues are suppose to be "southern heritage", think about this. People born and raised in the South are southerners. The majority of African-Americans in this country were born and raised in the South. By elementary deduction, the majority of African-Americans are southerners. Why aren't African-American Southerners claiming the Confederate flag as part of their southern heritage? Why is it that I don't hear any African-Americans express disapproval of Confederate statues being removed? Why is it that nearly every Black American southerner that I've met has disdain for the Confederate flag?
Can anyone answer why Black Southerners aren't looking at the Confederate heritage from the "Lost Cause" belief?

It wasn't shameful. The 11 southern states fought a tyrannical government and were willing to die for their cause.
It's disappointing a great city like Nola wants to do this. But, just like they can choose to remove it, the 11 states that fought (where the statues actually are) should be allowed to have any statues where they want.
Put them in museums. I can live with that. It should be an exhibit on what went wrong in the South. In my opinion, there should not be any memorials honoring the Confederacy.
General Lee fought for the USA at one point. However, he sided with an enemy combatant. That makes him a traitor. Period.
No, he is not a traitor. An enemy combatant is not a traitor.
No one was convicted of treason because at the time, there was in fact no law against breaking from the Union. The CSA actually did it the civil way, by holding a vote and voted to leave the Union. The USA did not recognize this vote and the CSA.
If you look at the Revolutionary War, we proclaimed we did not commit treason because the act of declaring independence separated us from all political ties to England. Same can be said and is said of the CSA, whereas upon declaring independence from the US, they severed political ties, and as an independent country, is not capable of being a traitor, hence why there were no convictions of treason.

Lie. It was shameful. Do not peddle the "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" stuff. It is all lies to gloss over the fact that many southern states were so committed to keep and expanding slavery that they wanted secession. Go read the Articles of Secession. Southern elites/politicians admitting that the desire to keep slavery was a major factor. Do not lie. What tyranny? The tyranny of the possibility that slavery could be abolished? It is not disappointing to me that Confederate statues are to be removed. I am happy for that. As someone who is the descendant of slaves, I see the Confederate cause as the real tyranny. Anyone who thinks that being able to keep slavery is a cause worth fighting for is part of the tyranny. Fighting for the freedom to own another human being, how oxymoronic.
Honoring Confederate soldiers? You can remember history without honoring certain purveyors of that history. Why honor a cause that was deeply rooted in keeping slavery? Answer that question.
