Here is what I've thought up, just off the top of my head
Defunct/out-dated ideas in 2017
1. (usually parents) "Just go to college and you'll be rich"
Just LOL!! Probably one of the worse ones. How many people's lives have been negatively affected by this one?
2. "the American dream"
No longer "works" for most people, there's simply not enough good-paying jobs to go around nor enough affordable detached homes. The economy that allowed this "dream" decades ago simply no longer exists.
3. "You can make it on minimum wage alone, [insert personal anecdotal story]"
Doesn't "work", at least not in this century.
4. "Getting married is a good idea"
Doesn't "work" for most people judging by divorce stats and stories of misery, an especially bad idea if you're a guy.
5. "Loyalty matters, grow with the company, etc"
It doesn't. Whether it's 3 years or 30 years you can be replaced at any time in cutthroat/ruthless 2017, there is no loyalty.
6. "Hard work pays off"
Doesn't "work" for most people, at least in the context of working a conventional job. "Smart work", connections/favoritism, lying on your resume, etc seems to be how you "get ahead" in 2017.
7. "The government can be trusted"
It can't, the internet/independent media has proven this time and time again
8. (usually a Leftist) "Let's just raise taxes/throw more tax money at [insert problem] and the problem will go away"
Doesn't "work", usually the underlying problem just gets worse (ironically), WHILE taxes go up
9. (usually a Leftist) "If we just outlaw/make illegal [insert problem] then the problem will go away"
Doesn't "work". See: drug epidemic, overdose epidemic, "lone-wolf" mass shootings, etc.
10. "The media are professionals, they would never lie to us"
Here is what I've thought up, just off the top of my head

1. (usually parents) "Just go to college and you'll be rich"

Agree. That's probably the worst one. Millions of lives have been set back years or even decades.
2. "the American dream"
No longer "works" for most people, there's simply not enough good-paying jobs to go around nor enough affordable detached homes. The economy that allowed this "dream" decades ago simply no longer exists.
Mostly agree. If you can land a good-paying job in a low COL area it's still doable, but it's probably the exception rather than the rule.
3. "You can make it on minimum wage alone, [insert personal anecdotal story]"
Doesn't "work", at least not in this century.
I've never heard that one. I don't think that idea ever worked.
4. "Getting married is a good idea"
Doesn't "work" for most people judging by divorce stats and stories of misery, an especially bad idea if you're a guy.
Getting married has always been a bad idea, that's nothing new. In the old days when religion was king (only a few generations ago), if you wanted sex you had to get married. The result was people being trapped in abusive relationships, unwanted children, child abuse, etc.
5. "Loyalty matters, grow with the company, etc"
It doesn't. Whether it's 3 years or 30 years you can be replaced at any time in cutthroat/ruthless 2017, there is no loyalty.
Agree, that one has been dead for 40 years.
6. "Hard work pays off"
Doesn't "work" for most people, at least in the context of working a conventional job. "Smart work", connections/favoritism, lying on your resume, etc seems to be how you "get ahead" in 2017.
Agree, it's all about getting past the HR bullshit, knowing the right people, and knowing how to deal with workplace politics. Outright lying/cheating is still not a good idea.
7. "The government can be trusted"
It can't, the internet/independent media has proven this time and time again
The US government has always been run by (and for) the aristocracy. The founding fathers were all aristocrats, many of whom owned slaves. When they spoke about freedom and liberty, they meant freedom and liberty FOR THEM at the expense of everyone else. The only difference in 2017 is that more people are aware of it now, thanks to the internet.
8. (usually a Leftist) "Let's just raise taxes/throw more tax money at [insert problem] and the problem will go away"
Doesn't "work", usually the underlying problem just gets worse (ironically), WHILE taxes go up
Not really a new problem, that's been going on since LBJ's Great Society.
9. (usually a Leftist) "If we just outlaw/make illegal [insert problem] then the problem will go away"
Doesn't "work". See: drug epidemic, overdose epidemic, "lone-wolf" mass shootings, etc.
That's nothing new. I say that laws against theft, murder, and other "crimes with victims" are a good idea nonetheless.
10. "The media are professionals, they would never lie to us"
I don't even.... just.....
1975: "If Ron Burgundy says it, it's the truth."
2017: "If a news story confirms my existing beliefs, it's the truth. If not, it's fake news."
Doesn't "work" for most people judging by divorce stats and stories of misery, an especially bad idea if you're a guy.
"Getting married has always been a bad idea, that's nothing new. In the old days when religion was king (only a few generations ago), if you wanted sex you had to get married. The result was people being trapped in abusive relationships, unwanted children, child abuse, etc."
Not true. Marriage and family are the foundation to hold a country like USA together. Otherwise you have the government take over for the family. Marriage is the best thing for adults who actually want to live like responsible adults. It also helps people financially by combining incomes into one household.
