Everyone has heard of George Soros. He's a mega-Billionaire who emigrated from Hungary and lives in NY.
But where did he get all his money from. Did he bring his family fortune with him? I know he made billions speculating against the Pound. But is that all? I can't imagine he made enough from that to finance all the operations he's involved in.
I heard he gave $246 million to finance the Womans' Day events and January 21st Womans' March in Washington. That I can see.
But the NY Times he also spent $12 Billion funding NGO's that send emmigrants to Europe. That's a whole different order of magnitude. I imagine he didn't use his whole fortune or even half of it in these efforts. (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/06/o...ollection&_r=0)
I never heard of him starting tech companies, like Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos. I've never heard of anything he did except currency speculation. To me even $12 Billion is a lot to make in speculating since by definition it is, a priori, a very high risk business.
Gee, I thought everyone knew all about him by now.
He is also the primary benefactor of Wikipedia and the Southern Poverty Law Center (as well as many other Leftist organizations) which is why you cannot trust Wikipedia to be unbiased in their articles on conservatives or conservative groups whom SPCL doesn't like. For example Wikipedia lists Pamela Geller and Brigitte Gabriel as "Islamophobes" and "Conspiracy theorists" (as well as a few other well known conservatives that write and speak about Islam).
What debunked? Soros has given $12 Billion to NGO's that send immigrants to Europe. I, the OP, quoted a New York Times story to back that statement up. Leftists generally consider that a reliable source.
What he does with his own money is his business. To an extent, anyway. If his activities destabilizes governments, that's a problem.
The thing I'd like to know is where he got it from. He made a fortune in currency speculation. But that big a fortune? Can you make ? x $12 Billion in currency speculation? Then why isn't the whole world doing it?
Apparently, you can.
And you might as well ask why the whole world doesn't do what Warren Buffett does. The answer is the same - he's extremely smart, does tons of research, and has an intuitive feel for it.
"Who is George Soros, where did he get his money from?"
George Soros broke the Bank of England and pocketed one billion dollars, they call it Black Wednesday. That's what a pal from the UK used to tell me anyway, he hated his guts.
Apparently, It's much easier to become a "self-made" individual if you have access to individuals who can use their power to distort and frustrate the workings of open markets at the right time.
And I have no problem acknowledging that Donald Trump is probably as much in envy of this advantage as is George Soros; however, I have no doubt that an international plutocrat with a questionable background poses more of a threat than a public figure identified with a specific nation with a stronger tradition of an independent press, and in the rule of law.
