Healthcare should be like a utility and not a for profit business where the people that earn the most are not even doctors. The people making the megabucks are CEOs of hospitals, health insurance companies, etc.

Every American citizen should be insured from birth. That should be part of the package of being American.

The government could allow older Americans, perhaps everyone over 50 or maybe 55 years old, to buy into Medicare for reasonable premiums. The remaining pool of people are younger and healthier and should be a cheaper pool to insure for insurance companies at reasonable rates for consumers. As with ACA, mandatory health insurance required to be purchased by everyone, no exceptions.

Unfortunately, we can't go back to pre ACA. Voters won't stand for health care benefits to be reduced. That isn't how things work in this country politically. The Republicans have to figure out a way to get the Conservatives on board with this fact.

I kinda agree here. But how to de-politicize it? Then we get into the abortion/birth control arguments.. which.. I don't like the idea of abortion being covered.. That makes it seem like pardoning a lack of responsibility.. But.. You know, so does covering the health costs for someone who is 500 pounds. So, I'm conflicted on that.

There is NOTHING that the government does best. Nothing good, at least.

My idea, and it's certainly not fleshed out and probably has issues that I'm not considering..

Government provides every citizen (!) with what amounts to the old 'major medical' or catastrophic policy.

Insurance companies stay in business by offering optional supplemental policies that cover prescription drugs, doctors office visits.. Routine things.

So.. Everyone is protected against the 'hit by a bus' situation.. But your normal everyday healthcare remains your responsibility.

There would likely have to be new taxes to cover this.. And then flesh out what, exactly, this major medical covers.. Does it kick in at $10k? Where is a fair number that doesn't bankrupt people, but still isn't 'socialized medicine'?

First step would be to get rid of all the Republicans in Congress.

Failing that, to strip them of their medical insurance.
