From challenging the establishment on healthcare and putting forth his own plan, constantly destroying neocon John McCain in debates and calling out Bernie Sanders hypocrisy, Paul seems to be on the rise.

With democrats entrenched in resist mode and establishment republicans recycling the same old plans Rand seems to be the only one fighting for a real solution to our healthcare debacle. He points out how the Ryan plan will not address rising costs and refuses to let this bill pass.

Rand seems to stand out as the only one with any common sense left in our dysfunctional congress.

I don't see how being a voice crying in the wilderness without a lot of followers makes him "the most powerful voice in Washington". You saw how powerful he was when he ran for President. He's a gadfly, nothing more, at this point.

He was polling in first before Trump entered the arena. And crying in the wilderness? Far from it, take a look at Nacy Pelosi for that.

Pull isn't power.

Gosh, I hope not. He doesn't pay much attention to his constituents who are not in lockstep with him and while he is a very busy boy, he tends to have narrow views.

Just heard that Trump wants to dismantle the Appalachian Regional Commission - wonder what Paul will have to say about that?? The ARC has been a major influence for good in eastern Kentucky for decades.

Nice deflection. What you state in your thread title is pure bullsythe. Randy isn't even the most powerful voice from Kentucky. As far as power, a boil on Mitch McConnell's rear has about as much influence as Randy. He probably has less real power than not only Mitch, but also Congressman Hal Rogers.

Randy's a darling of a certain libertarian fringe of the GOP. That's the limit of his influence, other than being 1 of 100 senators.

Rand Paul has called Paul Ryan's bluff. Paul Ryan wants to make it seem like the President is on the same page as the House GOP. That clearly isn't the case. Trump has said that he sees the House bill as the opening for negotiations.

Paul Ryan has a lot of power as Speaker. But Rand Paul has a power that Paul Ryan doesn't have. When you're passing a bill with no support from the minority, it can take just one member of the majority to kill the bill. That is only true in the Senate, not the House. Why do you think Obamacare has no public option? Because Joe Lieberman threatened to kill the bill if it was included.

Rand Paul is making a big power play and I think it's a good look for him.

I like a lot of what Rand is saying, compared to most of the Republican establishment.
