Healthcare costs have been an absolute nightmare for over 20 years. 12-15 years ago I worked at a small community bank and our group plan was tanked because 1 senior officer with the bank had horrendous health issues. I had to accept the high deductible plan just to afford it. Family of four, two of which were young kids. I paid $750 a month BACK THEN and still had an HSA set aside to bank my out of pocket deductible that was $5,000 p/yr. It was insane.
I had small business clients that had no insurance, other than to say that when they got sick- they went to doctor or hospital and just negotiated the bill. One client had a massive heart attack and racked up $50,000 in medical expenses quickly. His plan? Filed bankruptcy.
It's been a national disaster for a long time, and quite frankly playing politics with this issue is abhorrent.
There should be a serious and dedicated national discussion and policy regarding the US Healthcare system. Productivity and well being, in my opinion, is a GOOD goal for the nation. However having politicians play this silly ass game with it is utterly ridiculous.
Medicare for everyone allows room for a hybrid system. Medicare is a classic 80/20 system with a deductible. Most seniors opt for a supplement, or join a private Medicare choice plan.
So is the whole FSA thing. You need to bet on how much you will spend per year. If you are under then you lose the tax free health dollars. If you are over then you lose the difference. Why does health care planning need to be a casino??
One of the many scams of the government. Why not do the smart thing. Open up HSAs for everyone, regardless of income or deductible. HSAs are your money and carry over year to year and go with you if you switch jobs, or can be "cashed out" when you qualify for Medicare. Of course, that means government has less power to manipulate you and do "social engineering" via tax code.
A good friend of mine & her husband are Physicians (GPs/"family physicians").
They have spent a lot of time in DC, as of late, meeting with members of congress, addressing congressional committees & advocating for Direct Primary Care.
Which is the model for how she currently runs her practice.

Personally I could go either way. Eliminate the dominance of the for-profit health insurance industry for a simpler fee based system. Or single payer option or "medicare for all".

From my understanding, due to the ACA, if a person wants to buy insurance but missed the open enrollment period, that person can't even get insurance unless there is a major life change event.
That's pretty stupid if you ask me.
Employer provided insurance works the same exact way and has for many years.
