My friend "Bill"s wife had an affair with "Ed" Ed's wife showed up on my Linkedin suggestions. Different city, different industry entirely and no common connections. I have never had contact with Ed, much less his wife. So did a temp who did work for me on a project in another state 7 years ago whom I have had no contact since November 2010.

Linked In uses an algorithm based on who your contacts are and then looks at their contacts. Also any companies you've worked for. You agree to this when you sign up for their site.
Facebook absolutely does as well. They use it for very targeted advertising. Say I'm a small business owner who owns a wedding dress shop in Las Vegas. I do not want to waste my money showing my ad to random people on the internet that don't live in my city. On Facebook, I can buy targeted advertising that will show up only for females in the Las Vegas area who don't list their status as married.
I think it might be called Data Mining or Data Sourcing or ??
Seems I read that there was a European college start-up that developed a process to use this information to develop niche marketing groups so that they could fine tune Facebook and internet push ads.
I recall reading that they were bought out and that this was used by the Russian social media team on our election.
Has anyone else heard about this?

One can simply choose to not use LinkedIn or Facebook or even google
