Indiana inmates could have computer tablets by the end of the year. They would be used for educational purposes, accessing self help materials, communication with family, entertainment, paying commissary bills, etc. Authorities hope that a vendor will pay from them up front, and that they will be reimbursed when inmates order movies and music.

My question - They get free housing, clothing, food, medical care, education, computers, internet, and legal assistance. Aside from having the freedom to pay for those things themselves, what is the advantage of being an honest, law abiding, tax paying citizen?

If you think prison is so awesome, go rob a convenience store or something.

It's because we now have a for-profit prison system. The more people in prison the more money they make. The more amenities they can offer, the more money they make.

You didn't think these luxuries were because we felt sorry for them, did you?

I agree with this. Prison is a dog-eat-dog world. The biggest problem is not how you are treated by the correctional officers, but how you get along with other prisoners. It's no walk in the park.

It's not the freedom to pay for those things, it's freedom itself that's a HUGE advantage.

If you don't understand, as someone said, go rob a convenience store or something and you'll likely understand very quickly.

Really? The right to go anywhere you damn well please, anytime you damn well please, means nothing to you? The right to decide for yourself when and what you'll eat means nothing to you? The right to choose which job you'll have means nothing to you? The right to not have to bend over and drop your pants whenever someone orders you to means nothing to you?

Wow. Just...wow.

Well, every time I think I've seen the nadir - I get proven wrong. Yet I am still surprised.

I guess it's my optimistic nature!
