Poor kid. 22 seems really young to be a full fledged police officer working on his own. It's one thing to be a soldier in a unit of soldiers but to be on your own, in the middle of the night that is an exceptional person who can handle that responsibility at that age. So sad, prayers for his family.
Just FYI for all those who say "Why didn't he use a stun gun instead?" when there is a police shooting.
Quote:
Terney used a stun gun on the man but it was ineffective, Kidney said. The man then shot at Terney, who returned fire. Both men were wounded and paramedics rushed them to OU Medical Center.
This is why.

I don't agree with you often, but this time, you NAILED it!
This is the saddest story. He'd been on the force just over a year, and was also a volunteer fireman. He had a puppy he was training to be an Officer.
Sad, so sad. When I woke this morning, he was in ICU but in "very grave, critical condition". Later they broke in with the news he had died, and it really had an effect on me.

If he had used his gun first rather than the stunner he'd be alive I'd bet. I'm not saying there isn't a good time to use a stunner, just not this time and certainly not alone without another officer backing him up with bullets.
The future of solo night patrols is surely ending. NO officers patrol alone, ever, in LA County.

I think 21/22 is minimum age to be a sworn LEO in most states. My sister became a cop at 25 and she was the 2nd youngest in her academy class, I think the average age was about 30. However where I live the majority of cops are ex-NYPD which would account for the 30+ age.

Running isn't reason to shoot someone outside of some very rare circumstances. Do we need to come up with more money so there are fewer solo officers? Perhaps. A 22 year old probably should not be riding alone as the experience just isn't there.

Is the suspect black or white?
