.... I mean seriously, why have them at all? Why not just schedule a vote? I can almost guarantee you that these time consuming hearings are not going to change the vote of one Republican or one Democrat. They are a complete waste of time.
The only possible utility these hearings serve, is to #1) Grandstand and showboat so that a Senator can get some nice sound-bites on tape, and #2) Actively play a "gotcha" game in where the opposition tries to force the nominee to make an error so fatal, that he can't be confirmed.
Unfortunately, they have become nothing but sound bite sessions; however, since the POTUS only NOMINATES a potential SCOTUS justice, you have to give the people voting to put that person on the court a chance to question, interview, them.
We need to publicly ridicule the morons who use it for partisan sound bites.
There is not much going on in Gorsuch's closet. He seems to be the best nominee to come along in a long time and he should be confirmed.
I think it is ridiculous when these Senate panels convene and talk tough and try to intimidate people. It is grandstanding and very partisan. The Dems want to block everything Trump even thinks about doing never mind nominating a Supreme court justice.
You are right that these hearings are not going to change anyones vote. They are just stalling hoping that they will dig up some dirt so they can deny the guy. It is all so petty and shows how stupid some of these people are.
There should be a hearing just like anyone would expect a job interview but dragging it on is pointless.

Why? I mean, it would be one thing if you believed that these hearings will actually change a single vote, but they won't. All the Democrats will likely vote no, because they are Democrats, and all the Republicans will likely vote yes, because they are Republicans. The vote will come out the same way exact way it would have if no hearings had been held at all.

That's every one of them, Republicans and Democrats.

Not true. A few Republicans may vote no on seeing how evasive and heartless Gorsuch is, and a few Democrats may vote yes in the wan hope of saving their energies for another fight.

Here's my prediction....
Every single Republican will vote yes, and you might get 3 Democrats at most to vote yes. Other than that, every single other Dem will vote no.
P.S. It's not a judge's role to "have a heart", it's their role to apply THE LAW, even when that law produces heartless results. If you think the law as written is "heartless", you should take that up with your legislators. Don't blame a judge for doing what the law requires of him.

I agree. Gorsuch's answers reminded me of Sotomayor's, which should tell you it's all the same. All they can do is explain their record and when asked a tough question, say "I can't pre-judge a case."
None of the judges who are in the position to get picked for SCOTUS got there by being stupid and falling for rhetorical traps.
Yes, it's all grandstanding, which seems to be the primary focus of congress.
What dirt would actually stop a nomination? Not sexual harassment, since Clarence Thomas got through. Probably the only thing that would stop Gorsuch would be if it came out he has an illegal immigrant maid or gardener.
