This is insanity. #4 really puts it into perspective. They are receiving more federal money than states! Also, they are receiving more in federal money than they collect in tuition. I am tired of subsidizing these liberal institutions. What a joke. No wonder we are broke. This has got to stop.

Ivy League Inc | Open the Books
Quote:
KEY FINDINGS:

1. Ivy League payments and entitlements cost taxpayers $41.59 billion over a six-year period (FY2010-FY2015). This is equivalent to $120,000 in government monies, subsidies, & special tax treatment per undergraduate student, or $6.93 billion per year.

2. The Ivy League was the recipient of $25.73 billion worth of federal payments during this period: contracts ($1.37 billion), grants ($23.9 billion) and direct payments – student assistance ($460 million).

3. In monetary terms, the ‘government contracting’ business of the Ivy League ($25.27 billion – federal contracts and grants) exceeded their educational mission ($22 billion in student tuition) FY2010-FY2015.

4. The eight colleges of the Ivy League received more money ($4.31 billion) – on average - annually from the federal government than sixteen states: see report.

Note that the vast majority of that financial support goes toward their world-class research, including in basic science (pretty much ONLY done in universities), medicine, tech, and defense.

The university I was at, Penn State State College, had one of my professors doing research on a pill that would get people eat less. Ultimately after millions of dollars spent, the drug was unsuccessful as it was not practical. (required repeated dosages to be effective).

So the issue is not "research" but WHAT TYPE OF RESEARCH.

The issue of obesity has clearly been identified as being due primarily to overconsumption and lack of exercise.

With all of this research, WHAT DO WE HAVE TO SHOW FOR IT?

The obesity epidemic is off the charts in this country.

Some things can do just fine with less funding and subsidies from the American Taxpayer.

If someone wants to fund this research great. Why does it have to be subsidized by the Federal Government?

That's what research does. You don't research something if you think it will be 100% successful

Yes, we should cut funding for scientific research and student aid.

I love the agenda-driven term "rich liberal elite," as if there isn't a "rich conservative elite." LOL

I don't think you understand how research works.
