California the state people love to hate... Gas tax in California will increase 12 cents a gallon, to 68 cents a gallon which is 18 cents less than the 80 cents a gallon drivers in Reno pay. The world as we know it did not end in Reno when the gas tax went up to 80 cents a gallon, people did not post endlessly in forums about it, it's funny how that works
The entire country should tax gas higher - it's a win win win. We can build better roads, better cars, better public transit, discourage waste, etc.
But most public servants are scared to do so. Even in MA. where I live it's a tough one - yet so obvious. At least we just eliminated all the toll booths on the MA.Pike so we are getting somewhere.
It's a no brainer. They haven't raised the Fed. Gas Tax anywhere near enough to even meet inflation let alone to fix the mess.

Talk about no brainer
frank is right, all raising the gas tax is going to do is supposedly put more money in the government coffers, and virtually none of it will go to repairing roads, or other infrastructure. giving the government more money is like giving a drug addict more drugs, they are just going to waste it and hope for more down the road instead of doing something responsible with the money.
CA thinks they can write their own rules with impunity. You can get away with it for a period, but eventually people rebel and the pendulum swings back in the opposite direction. Regretfully you can't undo all of the accumulated damage. The businesses and middle class people that have left and will continue leaving CA won't be coming back. The poor, uneducated, and unskilled will stay however.
rebel over a 12 cent a gallon increase in the gas tax? If you drive 15,000 miles a year and get 15 miles to a gallon that means an increase of $120. It's really hard for me to see people 'rebelling' over that. But honestly if people leave because of it, that's wonderful 39 million people is far too many, let's hope we can pare it down to about 30 million.

When money is encumbered for a specific purpose by statute it is used for that purpose.

oh really? tell that to the supreme court when they ruled that the social security tax was just a tax and that no one had any right to social security when they retired. and note that the so called social security trust fund has NO money in it, just IOUs. the money that was in the socsec fund has been spent on other things. same with all the gas tax money that has been collected by the various governments that collect said gas taxes.
Making matters worse, the vehicle license fee is increasing by $25 to $175 per year (depending on the current value of the vehicle).
