IRS Just Hired Private Debt Collection Agencies to Chase Down Your Debt - NBC News

This is concerning for security reasons. Previously you'd be assured that they'd never call you. They would send a letter. That may change now. Be careful -- I could see scammers taking advantage of this.

the rule is simple.

if you owe money to government don't engage, don't identify yourself or other members of the household.

Talk to an expert accountant and let them deal. the few times it came up i hired the same guy who sorted it out quickly , cheaply and made me a small profit each time.

If you owe money to anyone else it is the same thing, don't engage unless you are ready to pay in full and accept the liability. otherwise seek help there are a whole bunch of NON profits who can and will help those who lack the monies to deal with it.

And of course never talk biz with someone who calls you. Even if it is your local bank, just ask name and extension number. and then look up the number dial it yourself and verbally ask about the extension number.

furthermore you don't have to give out your social to most parties that say you do. banks, brokerages of course require it to open accounts, but nothing else. i have never given it to my docs, dentists etc and just tell them i am willing to risk problems with payments etc.

Huh?

How is what the original topic discussing not a debt.

Here, right from the horse's mouth AKA the article:

Uncle Sam needs some help collecting unpaid taxes, so the Internal Revenue Service will now use private companies to tackle this growing backlog of debt.
Unpaid taxes IS a debt. Hence, the IRS is using private companies to help them collect this debt.
