The Industrial Revolution created the middle class.

Governments allowed workers to organize and bargain for wages and benefits.

The Technology Revolution created the USELESS class.

YTD, the US economy lost more retail jobs than coal did.

This is a global challenge and there's no stopping it.

Most people of the world do not have the apptitude for jobs requiring STEM skills, regardless of education opportunities.

Online shopping is crushing brick and mortar retail stores. It's just the way it is.

Walmart and Sears, etc. ate the Mom & Pop stores. Now they are being eaten alive by Amazon and all those family-supporting (at least for the managers) incomes are disappearing.

Tomorrow's working-class, middle-income jobs will belong to those who can use computers to accomplish things.

That's going to leave out a good chunk of people and they are going to resent that because they believe that if they work hard, they will have a good life and their kids will have a better life.

It's not fair that's no longer the case.

I remember when people were concerned about cars replacing the 'horse and buggy' industry. That turned out bad.

I guess we should never accept any type of progress.

I made a friendly wager with a few friends a few months ago that Target will eventually bite the dust like Kmart. They looked at me cockeyed and all but declared me delusional. My rationale is this: Amazon and Target are fighting for the very same customers. More so than any other national big box retailer. These customers are tech savvy and they are a little more upscale than Wal-mart shoppers. Also, Target tends to appeal to Millennials, who many by now have small children. Shopping with small children makes the task much more difficult. Amazon Prime offers two day free shipping on pretty much anything you could possibly want. There will be no need to go to Target, and Target will suffer greatly for it. I'm convinced.

It's hard to compete against technology when it's more efficient at doing things. That's what is happening. Amazon created it's own network of warehouses and has the technology to take in millions of orders and process them correctly (by machines) and shipped out to it's customers possibly the same day.

The girls at Target are really hot... I have no idea about what people look like at Amazon... Target should market differently, good prices and a place to hang out or something else... they need to evolve or die like other retailers...

For the people who are incapable of acquiring higher end skills like STEM, there is always trades. The only excuse they will have for that is pure laziness. It will be their own fault if they choose to be poor because they are lazy.

You have to have a niche market in order to survive.

For example, my family's business is about animation, pop culture products.

We also have bbq restaurants - veterans owned and operated. People come in to see the military pictures on the wall. A lot of veterans are our regular and repeat customers.

We also have franchises (all food related businesses) cannot be easily replaced or outsourced.

My fiance's family has five Italian restaurants.

You really need to find your own niche.

To have a me too type of business can work, but it depends on the situation, area, etc.

Retail workers can be easily replaced. So I am not surprised.

Walmart and Target are pushing their online operation, but they have a ways to go to compete with Amazon.

Selection, cost, convenience... It's hard to beat ordering something one day and having it reliably show up two days later. Certain household products can arrive within 2 hours in our area.
