Let me guess... You don't see the irony of Cult 45 complaining about Obama's travel costs, yet defending Trump's--which far exceed that of his predecessor.
It has nothing to do with jealousy, it is the fact that Trump is granting easy access to his administration and foreign dignitaries while increasing his income and the value of his property. Maybe past presidents should have bought a country club co they could have done the same.
Mar-A-Lago belonged to the US Government - it was a bequest in Margaret Merryweather Post's will and in that bequest, she hoped it would become the Southern Whitehouse for President's of the United States.
It took a long time, but it is now the Southern Whitehouse and hosting Foreign Leaders and Dignitaries regularly. Life is funny.
Nixon preferred another location in Florida, Carter didn't want to pay the upkeep OR the $1,000,000 annual taxes ..... so they gave it back to the Post Heirs who put it on the market for $20 Million dollars. The Country Clubs in Palm Beach, FL are perhaps the most Exclusive in the USA - Donald Trump's Mar-A-Lago has NO restrictions against Minorities or any Religion Test, which the others did and perhaps still do. He offered the heirs $25 Million and they turned him down (keep in mind the asking price was only $20 Million) - He ended up paying less than $8 Million for the entire property, including furnishings. Trump is many things, "Elite" is not one of them.
For those who hate Trump, he's already been to a roast before. He's been roasted by professional comedians on the Celebrity Roast on Comedy Central. If you want to see Trump insulted for more than an hour go look up the episode. I certainly wouldn't want to dine with those who absolutely hate me. Since the news media can't even attempt to appear impartial then why should he care to sit through a meal with them?
There is open registration for all Trump Rallies - anyone can request up to 2 tickets until they are gone. It would be pretty difficult to "hand pick" 10,000 attendees.
Symbolism. Rather than schmoozing with the media, he will be with the people. Love it.
