High taxes, strong unions and an equal distribution of wealth.

That’s the recipe for success in a globalized world, according to Magdalena Andersson, the Social Democratic economist who’s also Sweden’s finance minister.

The 50-year-old has been raising taxes and spending more on welfare since winning power in 2014. She’s also overseen an economic boom, with Swedish growth rates topping 4 percent early last year, that has turned budget deficits into surpluses.
Quote:
Sweden has the highest labor force participation in the European Union. Andersson attributes this to tax-funded parental leave and affordable daycare, which make it easier for both parents to work.

In contrast to most of its European peers, Sweden has budget surpluses. The EU average will be a shortfall of 1.6 percent in 2018, while the estimated deficit in the U.S. of 5.7 percent of GDP, EU Commission data published in February show.

More proof than ever that America should adopt a more pragmatic approach to the economy based on proven taxation theory. The ideological "taxation is theft" mindset on the right is only perpetuating income inequality and holding back growth.

The elephant in the room is...and always will be...UNIONS!

As the ruling donor class started a concentrated attack on unions in the late 1970s, as predicted we saw a massive transfer of income and wealth from the 99% to the top 1%.

To rebuild the working class, we need to rebuild unions and get big money out of politics. The power of the moneyed elite is enormous and the workers must find the guts to take on the corruptive influence of money in politics.

Once again the socialists on this board look to European utopia of government "free" stuff paid for by redistribution of wealth.

It will never work in the US. Americans have this aversion of being taxed to death. That alone will doom these people of realizing their dream of getting "free" stuff from other people's labor.

I'm actually center-left, I'm not a socialist, and I'm not advocating we go as far as Sweden. Increasing taxes on the wealthy is a common-sense solution to our revenue problem. Providing paid parental leave is not a radical proposal. Relying on platitudes by calling all of us "socialists" is cute but simply not true.

Nonsense. Americans love our most social democratic policies we have; Medicare, Social Security and public education. They are considered sacred. Unions are as American as apple pie. FDR, as "socialist" as any mainstream politician in Europe, is as American as apple pie. In fact, FDR is the most popular president in the lats 100 years and was elected 4 times.

Its just right wing propaganda over the past decades that have tried to erase people's memories of this. Its amazing that it can actually work in a country that is not a dictatorship but it does work.

Highest Labor Force participation in the EU, yet you think they are ALL about handouts? really?

Why do americans blindly idolize and worship the greedy rich? If the playing field in the U$ was truly as level as humanly possible-I'd be more inclined to see your point of view. But when the wealthy elite run the show for the benefit of themselves and their equally wealthy cronies, throwing the others a few crumbs here and there just enough to get them to actually believe their own lies about the "land of opportunity"

If it was so easy, many more Americans would be riding high-not all, but much more than now.

Yet Yanks have zero issue coughing up tax breaks for the wealthy to shelter offshore, and for Big Business to stash as profit. You all have no issues bailing out failed businesses ruined by corrupt greedy CEOs.
You yanks deserve your fate-better brush up on your Espanol!

They will never pay more.

Why? They will just complain to the politicians that they bought and paid for.

Never happen.

Government is never the answer.

I decide for me and not some morons who want to emulate Europe.

Because politicians are so much wiser with money than the people they stole it from

Once again, outside of a textbook, your anarcho-capitalist theory is completely ridiculous. I'm operating in the real world here. I'd rather a democratically elected government spend my money than be at the whims of a corporate board meeting which I have no say at all.

Sorry to ruin your party, but we're not ending the state.
