Is the U.S. "Criminal Justice" system a huge racket? (illegal, attorneys)

At Starbucks I was overhearing a defense attorney talk about her work and it sounded like such a joke. All these billions of dollars sucked out of the productive economy and into the legal system so that people who get caught smoking weed or committing some other bogus "crime" can stay out of jail and keep their record clean.
Pretty much. If you have money (even at the local level) you can hire attorneys, and pay fines etc in advance in order to get minimal sentencing. We've become a police state in a lot of ways, and put effort into making it a cycle of crime instead of incidents of it. A criminal conviction almost guarantees future ones due to what it does to your life.
This is why they have written so many laws into the books.
It is widely accepted that EVERY AMERICAN breaks at least three laws a day. There will never be a shortage of people willing to pay to stay out of jail for even the most mundane of things they probably didn't even know were illegal.
The legal system is setup by lawyers for lawyers to perpetuate their livelihood, line their pockets, and protect their power. They become politicians to ensure this will never change.
I'm a huge fan of deleting 2 laws for every new law written.
Even the civil side is a scam. I just got a letter yesterday from some lawyers stating I was covered under a recent class action lawsuit and would be getting some money from the settlement. The total settlement was 370K and the lawyers got 150K of it. Us who were harmed will split the rest. I am guessing I will get a check for less than 5 bucks.
Yup, we have to work hard to overshore all our productive industry (that saved the world's arse in WW2) so that we can support losers that are paid to treat grown adults like children. Very lame. I hope America comes to it's senses...
