True we by far have the best military, but when it comes to social issues do we just completely suck at everything else, especially in relation to social issues?
For example we have the "war on drugs" a completely stupid concept in the first place that does far more damage to innocent people than anyone else.
We struggle with maternity leave, which is also all kinds of stupid.
We have a "You did something bad? BURN IN HELL!!!!!!!!" mentality when it comes to anything.
We have a police force that loves to beat up, hurt and kill minorities, in particular black people.
We don't get our way? We just always love to think bombing and killing everyone that doesn't do what we want is completely acceptable.
We have a government body that finds torturing people completely acceptable.
We don't care about actually helping poor people, no matter their circumstances we just always blame poor people for their poorness as their fault and refuse to acknowledge our government has any hand in it.
We love to send our troops to foreign countries that have never attacked us and oppress/terrorize them but have the audacity to say we are "helping them".
We love our prison system and love to jailing people for BS reasons just for profit.

Unlike the previous replies, I'll try to take this post seriously enough to answer in more than 2-3 words.
The war on drugs hasn't worked--or maybe it has worked for some people. I don't know the answer but legalizing heroin is not the answer. Probably more help for the addicts is the answer. Who's going to pay for it? They don't get much sympathy from anyone because they CHOSE to start in the first place. They know drugs are addicting. It's rough on the police around here, chasing them down, then reviving them to save their lives and then they're at it again. Like a revolving door.
Maternity leave is a no brainer. I don't know why we don't have it as a national law but this country has to be backwards and hateful to its citizens.
The blame for poor people is strange. As if they want to be poor, want to be unemployed. Some do, of course. And someone on here can always think of someone they knew of who actually liked being on welfare. But not usually. We need to get people off welfare, find a way that they can have childcare so that they can work, not throw them off their health insurance if they get a job. There need to be incentives to work. Welfare is awful but working at a boring minimum wage job with no health insurance can be worse. Poor people shouldn't all be lumped in together just because of a few bad apples. But some people find it easier/lazier to just look their noses down at people.
I don't know when or why our country became a nation of haters, of people who don't want to help their neighbors, of people with very little compassion for others. It's not the country I know. I feel like I live in some foreign third world country these days.
You're probably going to catch a lot of flack for your post because the prevalent feeling in America has always been "you don't like it, well lump it and go somewhere else."
Many of our previous norms in this country were based on the idea that government should stay out of people's personal lives and let the marketplace do the work. This hasn't always worked out very well. We don't have as good a maternity policy as most other first world countries, we leave people to pay for their own health care if they can, and let people struggle to get decent housing. These are not things most first world countries believe in, but our government policies have been less invasive and many people have fallen through the cracks.
The latest populist trend in government is sweeping through several countries including our own, and we will have to see what marks that makes on our history. Nothing stays the same. I wouldn't really say that the humans are evolving into a more caring, sympathetic race.

The US is going broke "helping" poor people to the point they depend entirely on welfare and believe it's their right to keep living in that manner. But you feel free to fund them personally.
See my comment about despots. As for sending troops out to foreign countries, let women in those countries be abused. Sort of destroys your argument about not helping women.
