What makes you think anyone is going to do that? Trump is more about free speech than the last administration was. If you have been paying attention, it is the Left in this country that censors free speech (UC Berkeley and others) disallowing conservatives from giving speeches and anyone who would speak out against Islamic extremism (Ayaan Hirsi Ali). The Left hate truth.

Was it the left or the right that howled with rage when a former president made a comment about Trayvon Martin?

Now more than ever media outlets can see what their audience is reacting to/consuming. As we watch, stream, click on, link, share.....we are telling the media outlets what we want to see. At some point Americans have to take ownership. They are what drives the profits. It's all based on numbers of people watching, listening, streaming, clicking, linking and sharing.

So please don't blame 'them' all the time....we have to take some responsibility.

News sources have to pay for reporters, writers, servers etc. Then you want to take advantage of that for free. I see.

InfoWARS, Breitbart, Drudge, Daily Caller, and many others are free and link to those not free site stories, without a fee.

It would be socialist to have a free paper here in murica. Who's going to pay for it? Get your own paper and stop trying to make us like Europe.

The BBC charter is to:

Sustain citizenship and civil society.

Promote education and learning.

Stimulate creativity and cultural excellence.

Represent the UK, its nations, regions and communities.

Bring the UK to the world and the world to the UK.

America could build a serious national tv and radio company and something like the BBC if it wanted to. I love documentaries and some companies like journeyman pictures, even vice very rarely, abc from Australia, but even online when I watch a doc it inevitably seems to be bbc4 or something from the bbc
Good, thank you. A response that offers clarity. I was concerned you were mindlessly bitching, but you've actually got something worth listening too (for future reference, put this in the OP).

Short answer, I agree. America should invest in making NPR and PBS stronger. Overall, I think they currently are among the better sources of news, though I'll admit, sometimes they're underwhelming. I regularly listen to NPR and often find myself wondering where they found this person they're interviewing. I watch PBS less because I rarely watch television, though I know PBS has some quality programing and their NewsHour is probably some of the best TV news available.

With that said, we have a problem of political illiteracy. Any attempt to improve the conditions of these services will be met with one of two (or both) criticisms; "that's socialism" and "that's government propaganda." Now, the former is obviously idiotic, assuming we know the definition of socialism (most don't, so no matter how stupid the criticism is, it will be given), but that latter does have some value. I think it's unlikely to actually be a problem, but people like Mussolini used the mass media of the time (radio) to rise to power. The fear of government paid media isn't too unreasonable. I know that there are ways to prevent that from being a problem, but how do we convince those, in particular those who use those arguments to cover up their real concern, which is a sense that all things should be privatized?
