Am I the only one that has noticed USPS consistently delivering packages late? UPS and FedEx seem to be getting it right.
What if we just let USPS die of natural causes? I'm talking about not keep putting it on life support. If they can't deliver mail and packages on time, what's the point of keeping it around?
Weather is a critical factor in delivery delays.
FedEx has a horrible track record of delivering stuff to wrong homes in my neck of the woods. The community uses Nextdoor. Com to communicate about MIA packages.

I get almost all my deliveries from USPS and on time.

usps is a profitable service. you need to do research before posting , they have stupidly harsh rules that make them look like they are losing monies all over the place, but they are doing pretty good.
i like the 7 days a week service and the reasonable jobs it supplies while not costing the public a nickel.
UNDERSTAND this USPS gets no public funding. they also are forced to hold huge reserves and serve over 150 million homes.
i think we can safely say your title makes no sense.Why? Well the USPS is doing great "naturally."
The USPS is in a weird state of being funded like a business but is greatly restricted in its operations by the government, and is given the monopoly on letter delivery obviously.
Dunno, but a lot of people voted for Donald Trump because he vowed to run the federal government like a business, even though it's funded by an endless supply of everyone's money...
OK, deflection aside...the USPS doesn't receive direct government funding. It does receive the benefit of not having to pay state and local property taxes and it does receive the benefit of borrowing money from the federal government at very low interest rates. But to claim that the Post Office is funded by an endless supply of everyone's money is just simply ignorant.
I know better, and I stand corrected. They have run big deficits over the past 10 years, and would have many of those years without the pension funding (for those who want to paint that as the culprit, it's not), and their accumulated debt increases every year. I should have said they should be allowed to increase their revenues through rates, reduce costs or whatever is necessary to balance their statement.
And as you state, they get financial benefits that none of the competitors get.

The Postal Service has to get its pricing structure approved by the government, they are mandated by said government to deliver everywhere in the U.S., regardless of the cost of delivery to out of the way places, and they must fully fund their pension plans decades before those funds will be drawn down by retirees.
FedEx and UPS don't have any of those burdens - and probably wouldn't be in business if they had to carry those burdens.

any gains the post office gets from gov tax discounts are more than offset by strict rules. UPS would charge an arm and a leg for some of the locations that USPS delivers to.
And on top of that USPS does free pick up from the end of your driveway!
1.) According to the tracking notification, a package was retained at the post office with XXXXX zip code due to an "invalid" shipping address (the same address that I've had dozens of packages shipped to over the last 7 years). I go to XXXXX post office to pick up the package and the sweet and kind lady at the counter, without looking up the tracking info mind you, said, "It ain't here... it's at the main office". I told that her response was at odds with the tracking notification I received and I asked her to verify. She, being very very annoyed that I requested her service, refused saying, "I know it's over there... I don't have to look it up".
So drive about 11 mile to the main office. And guess what?!? Not there.
The next day I get a call from our office manager that my package arrived... at the original destination.
2.) I dropped off an item with a pre-paid label. The lady handed me the receipt and said, "If you look at the bot burrrrrpppp burp of the receipt there's a survey... you can tell us how we are doing".
Not even an excuse me.
