what is wrong with the people that still idolize someone that doesn't have a clue about basic American history?
The dumber he is, the more he seems to them that he is one of THEM. He is someone like them. He's stupid and PROUD of it. He spouts any old blather and his base cheers him for being non-PC. If such an idiot can become prez, there's hope for them all. <Sigh>

Since Trump gaffes and lies more than anything else, just HOW LOW do you want the bar lowered for him? How much remedial accommodation does he need? Should there be any expectation of a reasonable, minimal degree of truthfulness, integrity, knowledge, intelligence?
If you think he should set the standard, are you (and the rest of us) ever in trouble. Let's see how long he can continue to tread presidential water with rallies and multi-million dollar, long weekends to buoy him up in lieu of accomplishments.
You refer to those who would address Trump's stupidities as a Special Snowflake Menagerie. Most anti-Trumpers are far less Snowflaky than he is. Guess you can call his faithful the Moron Menagerie and those of us who will address his behaviors and idiocies, the Anti-Stupid, Pro-Integrity League.

Trump said "Had Andrew Jackson been a little bit later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War". I tend to agree with this. I'm working on the history of a man who traveled from northern Alabama and joined the Union army in Tennessee. Like others, his grandfather and uncles fought with Jackson. Jackson instilled a strong sense of nationalism among folks. This resulted in some of their offspring not wanting to break up the union. I'm convinced things would have been different had Jackson been around.
