I bet he had a backpack, which may have acted as a shield.

Having a shield only keeps you safe if you can fend off the attacker continuously while waiting for help.

A gun can permanently stop an attack.

You can blow your rape whistle and hope for help if you'd like, but I'll stop an attack on me.

Know your 21-feet rule - from inside 21 feet, the knife wins over a gun. Don't take it from me, take it from the law enforcement.
