Regardless of who he was talking about, it sounds like to me that he was being crude for crude's sake.
It certainly wouldn't encourage me to watch him but nothing he has done ever has. If I was watching him, I would turn him off and give a few months of a time out.
That's not really a gay joke, that's a "you're completely compromised by a foreign power" joke, as well as a "you seem to have a sexual fetish for world dictators" joke.
It's kind of funny watching the Right, which has been the side that stood in the way at every turn of gay equality (marriage, adoption, hospital visitation, employment rights, etc.) get all uppity and self-righteous about a joke from a comedian that wasn't even about homosexuality.

Considering the things Donald Trump said and the people he insulted during the campaign, Donald Trump deserves no respect, respect is earned. Stephen Colbert was on point. Free speech!
