I can't believe so many people choose to eat so unhealthily. Life is so much better when you eat right. More energy, less illness, more confidence, etc. So much slovenliness and poor judgement.

Well, they ARE Trump supporters. What else can anyone expect? "Duh, I think I'll go vote Trump, so I won't have healthcare anymore, but first lemme eat 6 Hostess Twinkies and a Big Mac."

They deserve it.

Notice these are also among the statistically stupidest states, and the states highest in crime. As the old adage from the movie Animal House goes, "Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son."

I like it. According to the USDA, the segment of the population with the highest obesity rate is adult Food Stamp recipients. 44% obesity rate. Make them pay a tax penalty.

That's only slightly more than the national average which puts the US obesity rate at 38%. Make them all pay a tax penalty. And since 17% of kids are obese, this could add up.

The national obesity rate is highly skewed by the Food Stamp recipients. The USDA's breakdown:

Income-eligible adults on Food Stamps: 44% obese
Income-eligible adults NOT on Food Stamps: 33% obese
Non-poor adults who of course don't even qualify for Food Stamps: 32% obese

Given the link between Food Stamps and a high adult obesity rate, the following info is why one cannot conclude that this is a red state vs. blue state issue:

Percent of US adults who have ever received Food Stamps, by political affiliation:

Republican: 10%
Democrat: 22%

And, yes, that's a lot of penalties. As you already noted, the obese cost us more in medical care. Make them pay a tax penalty.

No, it isn't. Both the Food Stamp recipients' high obesity rate (adult obesity rate: 44%) and their most likely political party affiliation are extremely relevant. You can't blame GOP voters for high rates of obesity when it's Dem voters who are far more likely to be obese.

Another look at the data:

Share of Recipients of each program that self-identified as supporters of Republican party in Maxwell Poll:

Gov. Subsidized Housing: 12%
Medicaid: 16%
Food Stamps: 20%
Unemployment Compensation: 21%

Disability benefits from government: 25%
