An interesting article and study that shows that understanding the world leads to different viewpoints on global issues. The results are unsurprising, but still interesting.

If Americans Can Find North Korea on a Map, They’re More Likely to Prefer Diplomacy (NY Times)

Quote:
An experiment led by Kyle Dropp of Morning Consult from April 27-29, conducted at the request of The New York Times, shows that respondents who could correctly identify North Korea tended to view diplomatic and nonmilitary strategies more favorably than those who could not.
Quote:
The largest difference between the groups was the simplest: Those who could find North Korea were much more likely to disagree with the proposition that the United States should do nothing about North Korea.

I found this pretty interesting:
Quote:
What drives these differences? Simple partisanship is one possibility. On average, Republicans – and Republican men in particular – were more likely to correctly locate North Korea than Democratic men. And Republicans were more likely to be in favor of almost all the diplomatic solutions posed by the researchers. (Women tended to find North Korea at similar rates, regardless of party.)

As a a self-identifying map/geography nerd, I found this to be very depressing (but not surprising):
Quote:
Americans’ inability to identify countries and places is not new. A Roper survey in 2006 found that, in the midst of the Iraq war, six in 10 young adults could not locate Iraq on a map of the Middle East; about 75 percent could not identify Iran or Israel; and only half could identify New York state.
Quote:
In “Why Geography Matters,” Harm de Blij wrote that geography is “a superb antidote to isolationism and provincialism,” and argued that “the American public is the geographically most illiterate society of consequence on the planet, at a time when United States power can affect countries and peoples around the world.”

I understand that Kim is 3 bricks shy of a full load, and that the crazy bastard has nuclear devices and could actually use them. Worse than that, Kim might actually transfer a nuclear weapon to a terror group for use in the US.

Not only can I find Korea on a map, I am also qualified to call air strikes and artillery fires for any location on a map.

True for me. I know exactly where every country in the world is on a map and I absolutely agree diplomacy is best. I am completely against war.

Sure - but I don't think going to war with them is the answer.

Look at the age section, there is a dip at the 45-54 age. That doesn't make sense. I figured it be a straight stead increase. Something happen in that age group?

And for heavens sakes! I could understand someone pointing to S Korea, Laos, Camboia, etc. But China? That is a freaking huge country, you can't eliminate China immediately!

Male vs Female 45vs27%
I am triggered. What about those of us who identify as both, or are gender fluid. This survey is bigoted! You see how the straight white male dominates us still!

I thought that was weird, too...a pretty significant decrease, too (35% to 25% and then back up to 35%).

I wonder if there was a sampling issue in that age group (perhaps not enough participants?).

Funny.

So, elitists (aka progressives) did a "study" that has an elitist conclusion.

This is why they can't pass the weeder classes in college. Dumb as rocks, and too arrogant to realize it.

Hmm - was it? It actually identified Republican men as being the best at identifying N. Korea on a map. Did you look at the article and survey?

Americans who know how many states there are prefer to carry a big stick.

It is basically to show you they not only make the "study" look stupid, but they have dealt with such matters in a more experienced capacity than those smugly claiming superiority with the study.

That study was an elitist propaganda piece which basically says "If you do not agree with our politics, it is because you are too stupid to find the country on a map". It is typical garbage by very stupid political people.
