They called the police because this is what schools do now. How many examples do you need?

The English teacher didn't tell him to put it away, she took it away from him. Even if she did tell him to put it away at first, so what? She didn't know what it was and took the boys word at first that it was just a clock, but when it started beeping it dawned on her that it could be a weapon of some sort and called the principal.
No one thought it was a bomb.

He deserved an apology for having the police called, not for getting in trouble.

IMHO, even calling the principal was overkill.

It's these damn zero tolerance policies.

In this case it was justified. Only an idiot brings a strange-looking device to school that could be mistaken for an explosive device and shows it to everyone. Making hoax bombs to scare people is also against the law.

The school staff didn't know what it was, they are not bomb experts.

At face value this is true; however, if you think it might be a bomb, you don't toss it in a drawer, sent the kid to the principal and then continue class with a bomb in the teachers desk.

How did y'all get me defending him now? Lol

I won't go that far. I went many, many years ago and I had to have visits with the principal even then.

Then you evacuate the school. They didn't.

How do you assume that's what the teacher did with it?
