the Dem governor beat the current candidate who is winning at that.
In case it hasn't been mentioned previously on this thread, please keep in mind that an estimated 2/3 of ballots were cast in this election before yesterday's incident, and as far as I knew, Gianforte held the lead.
This congressional seat has been held by Republicans since 1999, following the retirement of a hard-left Democrat (Patrick Williams) who held the seat for 20 years. (He even survived 1994!) Since the 1998 house race, the Dems have lost this seat by a pretty consistent margin--usually something like 58%-40%, with a small percentage voting third party.
If Quist pulls off even a single-digit loss tonight, he'll be the first Dem to accomplish that since the contest back in 2000.
And as a Montanan, I'm disgusted to agree, albeit speculatively, that Gianforte's behavior last night maybe, perhaps, pushed him a little further ahead in this election.

Winning this race would have been a huge upset regardless. Quist is doing much better than Clinton did against Trump so far. But Quist is basically a complete novice as well, with no specifics on any policy at all really. He's just a folk singer. Thats of course better than another puppet of big money interests and Wall Street. But it is what it is.
Getting late but looks like Greg Gianforte (R) won in Montana
The Democrats try as many dirty tricks as they can, and yet fail. It looks like most large precincts have reported, and Greg Gianforte the Republican has won his House seat. Democrats don't try to set people up and spring a surprise before election night. This contrivance was dumb. You all keep calling Trump and Trump supporters dumb, aggressive reporters who won't remove a phone away from a guys face, or masked AntiFA tossing bombs at Republicans aren't going to get you victories. Only ridicule and loss. Wise up!

He is, but then again, Zinke didn't pull off as impressive a victory as Trump did when both were on the ballot in 2016. Sure, Quist is doing better than most Dems have done in this at-large district in the past, but continuing to "do better" while losing isn't really success for Dems. Note, as much as Dems are bringing up the Trump effect, I think that the power of incumbency will protect many a Republican come midterms and Dems will remain on the outside looking in.
up by 5% with , in all likelihood, 2/3rds of votes counted.
Promising.
