NATO expenditures in 2016....

Germany = $40B
France = $43B
All of Europe including Turkey = $238B

i.e. The USA is paying for 73% of the cost of NATO. Yet it's primary purpose is to protect Europe. Europe is benefiting greatly at the expense of the US taxpayer.
No the US is paying for it's own defence budget, of which less than 5% is spent on Europe.

The US can review it's bases as it sees fit, and indeed announced the closure of a number of bases last year, however the US Defence Budget is not all about defending Europe, indeed Europe only forms a minscule part of the US Defence Budget.

US Forces in Europe are also miniscule, there are no US forces in most countries and beyond Italy and Germany not a vast amount of military presense. Whilst even Germany and Italy don't have vast US Military Forces stationed there and both countries are committed to spending the required 2% as is France, a country that doesn't have a single US Base.

The US is protecting itself. The world has been safer with Europe at peace. You want a return to the old days when Germany, Italy, France, England were armed to the teeth and competing against each other ?

If you believe in "pay to play" let the Marshall Plan recipients repay the U.S.

With all the US interests in Europe we have more to lose.

The point that Trump and his followers think the rest of the world is somehow unaware of.

US pays 21% and Europe pays 79%.

Not gonna happen any time soon, regardless of what we do. And again: why is it our job to prevent this?

More to lose than who?

But anyway, I guess I see the thought process here: The US should mind it's own business and never project military power around the world. And if the US goes to war to depose some dictator in Iraq, that's a reason to squeal like a stuck pig every day for ten years straight. And we should cut our military spending drastically.

But this all goes out the window when it comes to Europe. In that case we need to maintain a strong military and project military power towards Russia.

This takes some serious mental gymnastics, let me tell ya.

I guess all these anti-military industrial complex people start changing their minds.
