How many? You get money for locking people up. The U.S. is a disgusting example of locking way too many people up and destroying lives. Do we really need "for profit" prisons to show yet again that we are a joke in some regards as a nation?
Yes and the idea of trying to incarcerate people "for Profit" is insane. And of course the Trump administration and Jeff Sessions are planning to expand the private prison system whereas Obama's administration was beginning to put less of an emphasis on them, after reports of all the abuses.
Just google it. Private prisons are the worst prisons, rife with prisoner mistreatment, always trying to cut corners, and notorious for providing inadequate staffing and guard levels, and also extremely poor or non-existent medical care.
When Trump won, the stocks of the publicly traded main private prison companies immediately rose.
People see them as cheaper and do not care if convicts are mistreated (yes, some deserve whatever they get). But, punishing the people beyond what is deemed a fair sentence is immoral. And when you take custody of prisoners, you also take responsibility for that. We tend to treat POWs better. Or used to anyhow.
Expect our percentage of prisoners to rise with the mandatory sentencing guidelines coming from Trump's appointees.
And all the expenses and societal implications of that to follow. It seems the GOP loves "state's rights", until they don't.

8.6% of the US adults have a felony conviction. These are people who will never be able to fully contribute to society, particularly in the economic sense. Probably, they go back to crime. Not good for any of us.
Costs $30,000-60,000 to incarcerate someone for 1 year.
How many? I'd guess that everyone with a pulse knows we have private prisons in the U.S. My advice would be to stay out of any prison, no mater who holds the keys.

What power does Trump have over state prisons?
You are aware that there are federal prisons, right?
Mandatory sentencing of federal prisoners has nothing to do with state's rights.

Regardless of Trump's role, or lack thereof, private prisons are a terrible idea. The point of the prison system is to mete out justice, not make a profit. It creates way too much incentive for abuses of all kinds.

This has nothing to do with any State or their rights, It is all about making money, big money.
