I view government as merely a means to protect my individual liberty and arbitrate some disputes between people, not be a source for social handouts and management as you seek.

This is why you and I are at complete odd with each other.

You are a socialist/communist, I am an American who believes in individual liberty.

You and I are at odds and will always be.
Roads, clean water, clean air, functioning infrastructure is considered a hand out to you? That's just.....bizarre.

Don't have a party; not invited to the party. I'm an independent so…

Ultimately, I feel the better compromise on universal healthcare, which I support, would be to allow states a fair amount of autonomy. Set very basic federal guidelines, then allow states to expand, invest, and prioritize as they see fit.

For what it's worth, having more citizens with a better understanding of civics would probably do wonders in keeping the government from doing things that are questionably or obvious unconstitutional.
The major function of the Government....To provide for the common defense and promote the General Welfare. Now you can argue that because it also says Promote Welfare that these social safety nets should be funded, and I will argue that they are to promote, by establishing policies that further the welfare of the nation, not provide welfare checks.

Ask not what your country can do for you — ask what you can do for your country.

I don't expect "my" party to do anything for me. It would be nice if the other party didn't spend every waking moment trying to find new ways to take from me.

What has "my" party done for me? Selected a supreme court justice more likely to follow the constitution than whoever Hillary would have selected.

This is actually one of the more intelligent posts in this nonsensical, damned if you do - damned if you don't, threads.

I am so happy for the SCOTUS pick alone. It was the best thing that could have ever happened out of this election.

Really?

So someone you don't know from Adam comes up to you and asks to be elected to public office.

He will get a nice salary, excellent health benefits and a great pension.

You agree to give him the ability to create laws and eliminate ones he doesn't want.

He can show up, or not, when Congress is in session.

He can vote or abstain as he wishes when others like him want to pass their bills.

He gets personal protection at your expense.

He gets a chauffeured vehicle to take him wherever he wants.

He gets an expense account.

Wealthy people will come to him with suitcases full of cash to "help him get reelected" in return for a favor that will be paid for with your tax dollars...

And if you ask what do I get for electing you he says, "Nothing."

So now, who is asking for the handout?

If companies hired with the same "logic" you use, not one would survive.
