I haven't been to Portland. Why is it such a flash point?
It is a relatively isolated city, smaller than Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego but seems to have more conflict out of relation to it's size and importance. It's on the forefront or left/right issues, more protests, more loonies, more crime (that rises to a national news level), more racism, and more Muslim issues....
My city of El Paso is similarly isolated, 3rd or 4th tier, and of similar size but rarely makes national news.

It is a focal point of stupid people (aka political activist snow flakes).

It started getting that way around the 90's with the whole pretentious grunge scene.

That doesn't explain yesterday's attack.

Portland, Austin, Seattle, Denver, and San Francisco are basically the "hubs" of liberal Millennial culture. A lot of young people who move to Portland for its politics are the far-left SJW type Democrats and it's usually people who flee from red America. Therefore, they are quite a bit more politically engaged than what is typical. I, unfortunately, live in OKC and I know so many liberal friends who have moved to Portland over the past few years and they did it for the liberal politics. I would go if I could, to be honest (though I would prefer Denver over Portland).

Oregon has long been a haven for racists, bigots, and anti-government nutjobs of all stripes. It's also a magnet for young progressives and old hippies in Portland and Eugene.

Those two groups clash fairly frequently. It also attracts outsiders (like the Malheur crazies) because they know that 1) they can get a reaction and 2) they're unlikely to face serious punishment.

Portland became Hipster Mecca when people migrated from California to escape the monstrous cost of living. As such, many of the values of California became rooted in Portland, which is why it resembles those places.

As for terrorist attacks... who knows. There's probably not actually a reason. In all seriousness, it's not like it's actually a violent hellhole. There's crime because it's a population center and it seems like an uber leftist paradise (which, by the way, means nothing; leftists is how stupid people refer to a political group that seems like it's not their own... same with "rightist"), but this is, again, because it became hipster Mecca.

This right here sums it up. We have a lot of the alt-right around here, AND a lot of folks who oppose them. So we have anti-Trump protests where the alt-right shows up to try and start stuff, AND the anarchists show up to generally riot against the government.

Meanwhile the other 99% of us are going to work every day at the local high tech areas like intel, webmd, etc etc.

We've had some weirdness lately. Guy cut off his moms head and brought it to a store with him a couple weeks ago.

Only for the last 6 months. but the last two weeks we've actually been exposed to the violent fusion detonations occurring in the sky from something others call the sun. We're still trying to get used to seeing it again. Its been so long.
