Probably too controversial for Current Events.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/enter...=.ac7bbff12c67

"In a series of angry tweets Sunday, Hidalgo said she will call on authorities to ban the three-day July cultural festival that she said was “forbidden to white people.”

"France defines itself on its revolutionary values of uniting under one common national identity, regardless of race and religious differences, with laws to stop discrimination based on race."

The 2nd paragraph is the important one. It brings into focus diversity vs. assimilation. Must all unite in one identity or can groups remain separate from each other? Laws to stop discrimination based on race? Laws that identify people by race?

America's revolution was based on different principles than France's so maybe this doesn't apply to us. Separation is OK, a common culture is unnecessary, black-only and white-only are acceptable here maybe.

The French are remarkable for their clarity, unexcelled in exposing contradictions and the fudges that are required to reconcile conflicting principles. I wonder how this will turn out.

Really? Why do they have so many internal acts of terrorism then?

At least he knows racism when he see's it.

Too bad Slavery long ago has blinded us of this fact, based upon shame of our ancestors long ago. The same ancestors that bought the slaves from the Muslims back then, to establish Black Americans today.

Instead of seeing the big picture and being thankful in a round about way, that they are so privileged to be Americans today. They could be trying to get across the Mediterranean, tomorrow and not live in the best nation ever to exist.

For clarity, exposing contradictions. I didn't say doing anything about them.

She, not he. The mayor is Anne Hildago.

Slavery is the fly in the ointment. I don't know France's history with slavery. Haiti was a slave island when France had it. Even after 1789. I don't know if there were slaves in France itself or to what extent or if they were black or white or what. They were a great colonial power.
