BTW, how much has been spent on the war on poverty? When will we WIN it?
Yep, & it eventually did him in. & President Nixon, who'd helped create the Red hysteria & profited from it in his political career, & carried water for Sen. McCarthy et al. - had a secret plan to end the war. He simply unleashed H. Kissinger upon the enemy - & upon the State Dept. & the US military & the US public. None of us ever had a chance.
Was the War on Poverty winnable? We'll never know if it was, in that time & place - perhaps with a different approach, or different programmatic matrices. I think it was worth pursuing, & I still think it's ridiculous that in one of the most powerful nations in the Western World, there are people going hungry & cold & poorly educated & sick, with very little future to look forward to.
TMK, we've simply accepted that the poor will be with us always. Next up - oh look! Squirrel!
That is what I thought. I was in Jr. High when Kennedy was killed, but within 5 years, my HS buddies were going "over there".
Dang Girl, you know you just dated yourself there.
Cool, I like having some people closer to my generation here and Ladies from waaaaay back then are a rarity on these sites, you have insights many here do not, living life usually instills that
The Cuba problem was inherited from Eisenhower--Kennedy didn't start it. He was trying to get us OUT of Viet Nam and the military hated that because they make money on wars. One of the reasons he had to be taken out.
He certainly had his faults but he had the best interests of the people at heart.
Decision to launch the Bay of Pigs was Kennedy's. Whatever set up Eisenhower did, he was not President when the Bay of Pigs attack commenced. Kennedy escalated Vietnam, and took over for France. Which resulted in 50,000+ deaths, many ruined lives, and still costs us today.

100th anniversary of JFK's birth: Johnny, we surely miss ye
... Don't listen to them Johnny. They go around quoting that, "Ask not.." line that you coined, and every damned one of them is lined up at the government feed trough sucking it up and begging for more.
You'd be embarrassed to be seen with a modern Democrat. Just check out what they have done. There are actually sanctuary cities where someone who is in the country illegally can hide!
Can you believe that?!
Aside from the point another poster made with you using him as a foil to bash Trump, here is a big thing you are missing.
If JFK were to run today, he would sound like a Republican compared with how leftist/socialist the Democratic party has become. The left would like everyone to think the Republicans have gone hard right. In reality it is the Democrats who have gone hard left.
Don't believe it, fine.
Don't take my word for it.
Just go back to when Bill Clinton was president and look at his policies and the platform of the DNC.
You will see a large difference between now and just a couple of decades ago.
No. I was a Democrat then, I am a Democrat now. The EXTREMISTS have changed and have taken over the party. But the REPUBLICAN extremists have taken their party over too. The majority is in the middle with a lot of overlapping of both parties. Get rid of the far left and the far right.

Or........build something new that represents the majority of Citizens that have given up on the system because of those extremes. One starts at the Grassroots and builds from there, in todays climate it would not take long once the message was put forth. Just food for thought.

It was LBJ who escalated and prolonged the war. No one knows for sure, but probably Kennedy would have tried to end it. He didn't need the money from war profits--he didn't need money from anyone and he cared about the country. He made mistakes at first but he was getting on track. Of course his personal life was a total mess. But other than that, he did set a good example and inspired all of us to do our part to help the country. And he was truly for the poor even though he came from a rich background.
LJB was a real total sleaze. Kennedy didn't want him as VP but it was one of those things people do to get elected. LBJ has his mistresses too, and even an illegitimate child.
It was LBJ we were protesting against in the late 60s, wanting to stop the war. But the war went on and on--no one even knew what we were really fighting for. Probably so that the special military interests could make money, for one thing.
