Noam Chomsky: Republican Party More Dangerous than ISIS, North Korea - Breitbart

Quote:
Left-wing academic Noam Chomsky has declared that the Republican Party is the “most dangerous organization in human history” for their stance on climate change.
Chomsky, still considered to be a darling of the left, told the BBC that, unlike ISIS or North Korea, the Republican Party is “dedicated to destroying the prospects for organized human existence.”

Thoughts on his point?

I think climate change is the most serious threat long-term we as a people face. I wouldn't have put it in Noam Chomsky's terms, but I see what he is trying to convey by being shocking.

I vowed this past year not to vote for any candidates who denied climate science or opposed climate regulations, and it knocked out every Republican on my ballot above county level ... a first for me.

The issue is two-fold:
-1- We need to reduce the effect of human activity on the escalation of average world temperature. The better we are at this the cheaper it will be for society in the long run.

-2- We need to prepare for the coming climate changes which can not be avoided, and which will wreak havoc. For instance, we may need to build sea walls and rebuild port facilities to accommodate rising sea levels. These will be massive infrastructure projects beyond the capabilities of individual states.

If we deny climate science we can act upon neither -1- or -2-. We are hamstrung as a people, unable to positively act in our own best interest.

The Department of Defense has identified climate change as a national security threat.

The Republican party is the largest and most effective organization resisting climate science in the most powerful nation, and largest power consuming nation on earth. The Republican party is the number one obstacle in the world to us making progress against this very real and very dangerous threat.

The Republican party is on the wrong side of history. It will cost our people dearly.

Apparently, you're under the impression that we can control the climate.

Climate is influenced, not controlled. We can control our own behavior and possibly mitigate some of the damage. We may have already passed the tipping point and some of this, or much of this damage is possibly already unavoidable.

We can also decide to build the infrastructure needed to cope with changes we know are coming. Or we can wait and watch our coastlines erode and cities flood. The more cost effective approach is to plan and be proactive. It isn't pretty.

There was a time when such a statement seemed ridiculous.

Not anymore. Especially with all the warmongering coming from the right.
