I think it could easily happen via a coup in Washington and I think it might be something we might face whenever Trump leaves office, be it by impeachment, resignation, or him serving out his Presidency until 2020 or 2024.
When it happens, I am worried about severe oppression for anyone who doesn't conform or is perceived as an enemy of the state. This will include atheists, scientists, liberal historians, the LGBT community, Muslims, etc. Society will likely be a cross between "A Handmaids Tale" and "V for Vendetta." I can easily see the Southern Baptist Convention being absorbed by the new government and becoming the state church. Media and the Internet will be heavily controlled and censored by the state.
Why could this happen? A large percentage of Americans have lost faith in our system of government and believe the only option is to burn the entire thing down and start over. They realize there is no rolling back Roe v Wade, marriage equality, or forcing cultural Christianity and traditional values on everyone within the confines of our current system of government. They will need a new, right-wing authoritarian government to accomplish their goals. Whether Trump serves out his Presidency or not, it's very likely that a Democrat will be elected in 2020 or 2024 and when that happens, I don't think the far right will be able to accept it. We are already seeing more and more calls for revolution from the far right. We are headed to a very dire place in this country.
I am beginning to wonder if progressives need to start thinking about getting or renewing their passports so we can escape once the coup happens.
Maybe the Baptists were right when they were preaching that gay marriage would be the end of our country. It's simply happening in a different way than they expected.

Think of all the Jewish-owned businesses and possessions seized and confiscated by the Nazis... Capitalist? Or collectivist?
Yes, this is really what it comes down to. Is the coercive power concentrated in the authority, the state? Or are individuals free to own things, prosper, and self-determine?
The problem is state power, and how collectivism magnifies and focuses power, not necessarily which particular psychopaths are pulling the strings or their pet goals.

Anyone who has been around politics and forums/boards/chat/social media long enough knows that any time someone on the left says:
"I think this should be law..."
"I think this needs to change..."
"I think we should do away with..."
"I think we should make people..."
"I think this will happen if we don't..."
You know good and well that they got that from one of their little think tanks (used to be moron dot org and Daily Kos, among others...could still be Kos) and that is exactly what they will push for the whole time telling you that there's no such proof that they are doing that.
Every.
Single.
Time.
And every single time, what they claimed not to be doing comes to the forefront with all of these supporters immediately, making it look like the entire country supports it when in fact, they've been building this group behind closed doors for months or years. You will see them push for what they claim within a year or 2...sometimes it takes a little longer. It took them a pretty long time to finally come out and admit that they are socialists after claiming for so long that there were no socialists in their party. Liars.

No worries, we are in dire times. Those who think Trumps election is the "hump" to a resolution are fooling themselves (while I do not see Trump as idealistically the defender of such an ideal, I do respect and admire the decisions he has made in defense of such). As our founders stated numerous times, it is only through vigilance in the defense of liberty to which we can achieve a free system of government.
Progressives are gearing up, testing the system. Their next reign of power will make Obama look like freedom and liberty personified.
Mark this. The first Amendment will be targeted and if they can, tossed even before the second amendment. period.
