Making calls from the Russian embassy to avoid monitoring by U.S. intelligence is not "back channel." It's covert communication and if you have links about other U.S. officials doing this, please post.
Of course, it's nefarious. What possible innocent purpose(s) would there be to using the Russian embassy communication lines?
Mueller is far from partisan and widely regarded as a lawman of intelligence and integrity. Attempts to smear his good name have been promptly swatted down by Democrats and Republicans alike.
Might as well go back and get some other talking points. These ones are bogus.
