Why is the Opioid Epidemic Hitting Rural America Particularly Hard? | Iowa Public Radio

The more I take road trips, the more I realize that unless it is a mountain or water recreation area the more problems rural America tends to have.

Most of rural America if not in a scenic area that attracts rich retirees is basically nothing more then a bunch of heroin, meth, elephant tranquilizer usage and binge drinking.

Here in Nebraska, the heroin use rate is the likely the lowest in America but the rates of alcoholism and eating addictions is very high.

For example, rates of obesity in many of non-ranching, non-urban areas are in the 35% to 37% range similar to the rates in Mississippi and West Virginia.

I know here in Nebraska, most people who have rural county license places that come to shop are a good 50 to 100 pounds more then the typical Omahan.

The rate of obesity in Omaha is about 27% and in the rural counties around Omaha it is about 35 to 37% which is about what it is in deep south.

County Health Rankings & Roadmaps

Obviously, I can't stereotype all of rural America as scenic areas like Aspen, Vail, Park City and Bend are likely some of the healthiest places in America.

I just went on a little road trip and I was surprised at how much people in rural areas and small towns worry about junkies. It's pretty counter-intuitive, but I deal with less drug crime in inner-city Chicago than people in the country do.

As somebody who lives in rural America, there really isn't anything to do other than go to church or go to the bar. Obesity is a problem because people typically drive long distances, don't exercise on a daily basis, and tend to eat lower quality food. I think the boringness of rural America encourages things like alcoholism and drug addiction. As you said, rural America, especially landlocked states far from water or mountains, are experiencing the worst of it.

The overwhelming majority of gun murders and shootings in this country happen in big cities. Is the big city mentality the reason city dwellers want to shoot each other?

The state with the biggest drug abuse problem is.....Bernie's state of Vermont which explains a lot.

In 2013, Business Insider compiled a list of the regions and places most affected by drug use in the United States [as surveyed and reported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration from 2010-2011]. The state that had the most mentions? Vermont. Out of a population of 625,741 (the second-smallest state in the union), 15.29 percent (95,765 residents) used illegal drugs in the previous month.

It's pretty hard to do drive-by shootings in the country.

Doesn't seem like an attack moreso someone wanting some understanding. I think the OP makes a very valid point.

Outside of just the addiction you have to factor in depression. I'd say depression is an issue in this country as well. Maybe moreso than in poorer countries. Sometimes its not about how much stuff you have. There's other factors in life that I think we've missed as a country.

It does seem like there's been a lot of rural bashing threads on here lately. I think it's great that our urban betters look down on us drooling, morbidly obese, walmart shipping, meth crazed rural simpletons. Maybe they'll all stay far away in the cities.

I was raised in suburbs around dc in areas that are still pretty rural, my mother was raised and grandparents live in horse country in loudoun county virginia which is very rural where she lived, I drive all the time to my parents mountain house near forsythe county Georgia and when they lived int he moutnains of north carolina and I know rural north florida and many rural areas around texas pretty well. I have rode in horse events in rural places all over the south and I can say almost every rural place and small town I know are attracting some of the wealthiest and richest people in the states?

I guess I can understand West Virginia’ and virginias and appalachians opoid problems starting with local miners turning to OxyContin to alleviate the pain and discomfort of their long hours and dangerous working conditions but I just dont see this epidemic all over rural america. Which areas is all this heroin supposedly concentrated?

The most gun violence also takes place in the state where it is easy to get guns. Not sure where in these states the violence takes place, but their cities are not that big comparatively.

..."Economic factors also appear to be related to firearm deaths. The poverty rate in eight of the 10 states with the most gun violence was above the national rate of 15.8%. Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Arkansas, the states with the four highest poverty rates in the country, were among the states with the most gun violence"...
