Some people here are clueless.

Here are the facts:

1) U.S. invades Puerto Rico in 1898.
2) U.S. makes Puerto Rico into a U.S. territory and applies full jurisdiction in the island.
3) U.S. makes all Puerto Ricans U.S. Citizens by force just in time to be drafted into W 1 and the rest of U.S. Wars and military conflicts that followed.
4) U.S. has ultimate jurisdiction in Puerto Rico for over 1 century.

Those are the facts,,,,,,just like when the U.S. brought slaves in this country by force and the U.S. government gave its blessing.....the best we can do after the fact is give them the same rights as any U.S. Citizen and give them representation and voting rights over the federal laws and politicians in Congress that rule over them.....they sure earned it under the circumstances.

We can't afford to have another 'West Side Story' - many many innocent parents have sadly had to sit through school productions of this nonsense. For the sake of peoples sanity please stop Puerto Rico and it's evil plan to produce and inspire more such musicals.

This is not in the best interest of the United States. I don't think PR should be allowed to become a state without all of our consent. We should be allowed to vote on whether or not we want PR.

If PR becomes a state, what's to stop all the other U.S territories?

We have to pressure congress to stop this!
NO- then set them FREE- let them be their own country- why does it bother you anyhow ? spanish speakers?

As far as I'm concerned, the first time they protested a naval base, we were done.

Like the current influx of wage crushing immigrants and guest workers, we just don't need them.

The people who do want them here are willing to accept dependency and lower wages in exchange for Democrat votes.

It is a fact that the only way Democrats win elections is by forcing working Americans to pay for the generational dependency that is the ear marker of a loyal Democrat.
we already have "them" how rude to the PRican community

Puerto Rico :
* Currently, more than 10,000 active duty military personnel from Puerto Rico serve across the branches of the U.S. Armed Forces
*During the Vietnam War, an estimated 48,000 Puerto Ricans served a total of 345 Puerto Ricans who died in combat, 18 were listed as MIA's.
*It is estimated by the DOD that 65,034 Puerto Ricans served in the U.S. military during World War II
*1,700 Puerto Rican National Guardsmen were among the 20,000 Hispanics deployed to the Persian Gulf
* September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 was hijacked. Among the pilots available that day of the were Lieutenant Colonel Marc H. Sasseville and Lieutenant Heather Penney Garcia. They were given the mission of finding the United Airlines Flight 93 and destroying it however they could. Since the fighter jets were absent of missiles and packed only with dummy ammunition from a recent training mission, there was [b]only one way to do it and that was by ramming the aircraft. however, it was not until hours later that they would find out that United 93 had already gone down.
* Specialist Frances M. Vega became the first female Puerto Rican soldier born in the United States to die in a war zone.
*Over 1,225 Puerto Ricans have died while serving the United States

That is NOT true at all. It's easier getting a PR birth certificate than it is to get a US passport.

Because hurp durp muh GOP can only win by denying people the right to vote. OP's anxiety perfectly illustrates the GOP's current position that they can only win with lower voter turnout. Maybe this country isn't so right-wing as he errenously believes

- The American flag looks perfect the way it is now

- Puerto Rico is a very left-wing place politically. Allowing them to be a state means that the Democrats will have a permanent advantage in the Electoral College and in Congress as the new Senate and House seats allotted to them will be filled by Democrats. Puerto Rican voters are also susceptible to the Democrats' racial politics and stand in racial solidarity with illegal Mexicans and Central Americans in favor of illegal immigration and things like the Dream Act and illegal alien amnesty.

They're American citizens. That should be enough to allow them to vote. Every American should support that regardless of political ideology. Not doing so is basically text book unpatriotic.

- This will be adding another non-English speaking area to the U.S. and will undermine efforts to make English the official language of America

English is the official language of America. Just because we at times support multiple languages, doesn't mean it isn't the official language. I get it though, some fear culture.

- Yes, Puerto Ricans will have to pay federal taxes if they're a state but they are an economic basket case and will receive far more in federal funds than they pay in. It will be a financial black hole for the American taxpayer, a large version of Detroit, Chicago, Newark or the Bronx.

Don't forget many of the Red states down south. They're just a black hole of dollars drained from the west coast and north east.

I truly believe this is a ploy by liberals and Democrats to gain and hold power. THey've tried to push for Washington DC to be a state for a long time and have failed and now they want to try with Puerto Rico. Because the left moving Democrat Party can no longer appeal to the average American, they have to resort to these games.

Or much like equal rights, they're only continuing to fight for equal say in government for ALL citizens.

Though I'm open to allowing Puerto Rico to be a state in exchange for New Jersey or California leaving and taking their electoral votes and Congresional representation away.

As a patriot for the great United States, you sir, disgust me. Next you'll be calling for the institution of a 3/5th law against those who don't share your point of view.

Puerto Rican's are already Americans. But, I can't see the statehood thing ever happening, because PR is a Spanish speaking country.
Even though a small faction of PR voters continue to support statehood, I think most Puerto Rican's are content the way things are. And what is the upside for the US, taking on their debt?
There would need to be a restructure of all the 70 political entities. Who will want to give up their little piece of the pie? Nobody. I just don't see it happening.
My DILs family lives there. They are business owners and landowners and are not involved politically at all. They just keep under the radar and go about their business. They like it fine just the way it is.

According to the Wall Street Journal, 97 percent voted for statehood, though turnout was only about 23 percent.

I don't see an issue with bringing Puerto Rico into statehood.
If you're curious to their debt, should look into why they can't file certain chapters of bankruptcy, and other factors like the lend lease...

As far as being afraid of Puerto Rico throwing elections or crying foul over a possible welfare state, that's just plain fear out of prejudice. A good majority of my successful friends hail from Puerto Rico both back in NY and down here in Florida.

Anti gun? You must be kidding. 3 of my friends in NY taught hunter safety courses and they were high up in rank at the rod and gun clubs I had attended. Those that weren't high ranking members were no different than you or I, they owned everything from 22 target rifle and pistols, to 30-06 bolt deer rifles, to ARs AKs M1As 1911s Glocks, etc.
Anti Gun... pfft.

Debt aside, they're a US territory. Kind of get the benefits of a state, just not the title. But that leaves them with crippling debt. The ones who can come stateside, do. And they do quite well for themselves and their families. They don't stick their hands out for freebies, they start with little to nothing and wind up running/owning businesses...

I say trade NY for Puerto Rico. Cuomo wants to give free tuition and safe spaces for junkies to shoot up, require police to carry Narcan and administer it, not arrest the fiends and put them into a lengthy conducive rehabilitation program (let's face it, 30-90 days isn't going to clean any addiction up, that takes years) strip folks of their 2nd ammendment, upset the tax payers, let him bankrupt the state, ten fold what Puerto Ricos debt is.

Yes! That's what we all want, but they don't even want to be free. They aren't proud to be Puerto Rican.

All that flag waving is fake.
