Watching coverage of it on Sky now.

Appears to be a huge protest going on concerning the government response to what has happened, and how it happened in the first place.

Sounds like the public spent 10M pounds, ~$13M, but only a fraction of that was actually spent on refurbishing the building. They want to know where the rest of the money went.

Huge protest going on right now. I expect it to be a full riot in a few hours. Those people are upset and rightfully so. I would be worried if I lived in any of the other tower blocks. They don't seem to be safe at all.

Yeah. It could very well turn that way before the evening is over. I'd be getting out of that area for safety reasons. People are very frustrated at the local government.

I think they need to rethink the proposed wood high-rises planned for Portland and New York. They are disasters waiting to happen.

The contractors cheaped out on the cladding used to reclad the highrise to make it look more modern. They used a flammable version that is banned in the USA. It save them ~$7,000 on a $13,000,000 project.

That flammable cladding is believed to be what caused the fire to spread so fast.

A high-rise building is not allowed to be built of combustible products. This means you not even allowed to have combustible vinyl siding on the building.

A high-rise building is defined in Chapter 2 of the IBC as a “building with an occupied floor located more than 75 feet (22 860 mm) above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access.”

Oregon city approves permit for US’ 1st all-wood high-rise

Construction on the 12-story building, called Framework, will break ground this fall in Portland’s trendy and rapidly growing Pearl District and is expected to be completed by the following winter.

I wouldn't move into the thing given what's happened in London.

I was going to say the same thing. Much like the projects in U.S, council housing, especially tower blocks were on the decline (in terms of crime, maintenance, funding and safety) by the 1970s.
