The very first line in the article:
Quote:
A man with 16 DUI convictions on his record has been charged with drunken driving again after fleeing from a crash and handing officers a phony license, authorities said.
for example, which more clearly lays out that he has 16 convictions, of which many were for DUI.
IE:
Quote:
A spokesperson for the Cook County Sheriff's Office said Clingingsmith has 16 prior convictions, many for DUI. The Tribune reports his convictions include possession of a controlled substance, aggravated fleeing and eluding and criminal damage to property.
News folks seem to be playing telephone, and reporting on other articles rather then finding out facts for themselves. So we have responses all over the map, and confusion.
So maybe not thread fail, he could be right or wrong.
It isn't just liberal States. I read the "police blotter" of our county newspaper and regularly see people arrested for their 8th - 16th DUI. Unless a person is in Jail/prison it is very hard to prevent them from drinking and driving.
His first DUI conviction occured over 35 years ago.
Not all of his convictions were DUI related. He is a drug addict. Guy was caught shoplifting in my town a few years ago.
I recall the unusual name and background.
According to this link, the record holder for DUI convictions lives in South Dakota and has 30.
Agreed. Failure on my part. In my defense some of the articles indicated differently, but that link lays it out FAR FAR more plainly.

According to prosecutors, Clingingsmith has 13 felony convictions dating back to 1988 -- nine of them for DUIs, for which he received sentences from two to seven years in prison. His most recent DUI conviction came in 2007 when he was sentenced to four years in prison on three drunken driving cases, Gates said.
Between 1982 and 1992, Clingingsmith received six misdemeanor DUI convictions and one violation, Gates said.

The link you provided sounds inaccurate because it's not very specific. The link the OP provided seemed to be more specific. I'm going with the Tribune on this one.
